Un-Self Portrait A/W12 Collection by Gabriella Marina Gonzalez

Un-Self Portrait è l'ultimo progetto creativo della designer Gabriella Marina Gonzalez. Americana, cresciuta a Miami con padre cubano e madre italiana, Gabriella, dopo essersi laureata presso la Central Saint Martens nel 2009, vive e lavora a Londra, dove ben presto si è guadagnata l'attenzione della stampa Inglese. I suoi eccentrici lavori approcciano artisticamente l'estetica fetish, focalizzandosi  sull'uso della pelle per la realizzazione di accessori dai volumi strutturati e pezzi che ricordano tutori ortopedici.  L'immaginario prescelto dalla Gonzalez è ricco di suggestioni macabre ed hard-core, raccontate attraverso una drammatica poesia filtrata dalle stesse creazioni. Un Self Portrait nasce dalla raccolta di esperienze vissute dalla designer durante i suoi numerosi viaggi negli Stati Uniti. Ogni elemento intrappola un ricordo, che in esso si oggettiva e acquisisce nuova identità attraverso una lavorazione interamente manuale. Proprio come vicende  diverse formano l'identità caratteriale di un individuo, i materiali eterogenei trovati dalla Gonzalez nel corso dei suoi itinerari, costituiscono la collezione, che si configura come un eclettico collage. Un cappotto di pelliccia di scimmia del 1920 viene decostruito e riassemblato in un abito cut-out in knitwear; che lascia intravedere le fasce bondage ricavate dal vinile di un tavolo del 1950. Spesse corde in seta rubate a tendaggi barocchi, diventano cinghie di lusso per scarpe dall'altissimo platform in legno lucido, mentre brandelli di seta e chiffon vengono impiegati per head-pieces simili ad appliques d'arredamento. Lo stile è sopra le righe, libero da ogni costrizione, e provoca un violento impatto visivo, volto a colpire direttamente il tessuto emozionale dello spettatore. Complessi ed eccessivi,  i pezzi di Gabriella Marina Gonzales sembrano essere riservati ad un popolo di "freaks" post apocalittici; tuttavia noi comuni mortali non riusciamo a non rimanerne indubbiamente incuriositi ed affascinati.   

Un Self-Portrait is the latest creative project of designer Gabriella Marina Gonzalez. American born, Gabriella grew up in Miami with a Cuban father and Italian mother, and after graduating from Central Saint Martens in 2009, she based her life and work in London, where she immediately gained the attention of the English press. Her eccentric works approach in a very artistic way the fetish aesthetic, focusing on the use of leather to realize structured accessories and pieces that look like orthopedic splints. Gonzalez's imaginary is full of macabre and hard-core references, tell through a dramatic poetry, which is filtered by her extremely suggestive creations. "Un Self Portrait" was designed, hand made and shot by the designer while traveling abroad in the United States. Each element traps a memory, which becomes a sort of concrete thing. Gathering the encounters one experiences while traveling and interpreting them into individual pieces inspired the collection. The materials were sourced in a similar manner, picked up along the way by Gabriella herself. The collection includes vintage monkey fur reassembled from a 1920’s coat to form part of the showpiece dress. In the designer’s signature style, shredded silk appliqué was made from discontinued chiffon. Vinyl from a 1950’s table cover manufacturer’s dead stock was used to create metal like tubes and a new take on the GMG harness. Silk rope from home decor was used to create luxury straps on high gloss wooden platform shoes. The cloth's appeal breaks any rules, causing a strong visual impact on the viewer. Complex and excessive, Gabriella Marina Gonzalez' s pieces seem to be designed for a tribe of post apocalyptic freaks, awaking also the interests of common people through their mad uniqueness.
