Cory Booker - Jewellery for a cause

Di tante collaborazioni nel mondo della moda, quella tra un sindaco ed una creatrice di gioielli è sicuramente la più inaspettata. Già nel 2009, Cory Booker, sindaco di Newark (New Jersey) prese a cuore la questione della liberalizzazione delle armi prima che sia di attualità ed annunciò il suo programma di riacquisto di armi da fuoco: ogni cittadino che ne possedeva una avrebbe potuto scambiarla per 200 $. L'operazione ebbe successo e la municipalità raccolse tra le 350 e le 400 armi, tra pistole e fucili di tutti i calibri, riuscendo così a formare uno stock. È però l'incontro con Jessica Mindich, ex-avvocato riconvertita nella creazione di gioielli con il suo marchio “Jewellery for a cause”, che già da tempo per ogni vendita versa il 20% dei guadagni ad organizzazioni no-profit o ad associazioni varie, che da vita alla sorprendente collaborazione: Jessica avrebbe recuperato lo stock di armi e proiettili per fonderle, crearne gioielli e versare una parte dei profitti all'associazione “The Gun Buyback Amnesty Program” di Newark. Nasce così “The Caliber Collection” una serie di bracciali minimalisti dorati, argentati o con un piccolo diamante, con inciso il nome della città di Newak all'interno ed il numero di serie dell'arma dalla quale sono stati creati. Il successo è tale, che altre quattro città degli Stati Uniti stanno pensando di fare lo stesso, senza contare le numerose ordinazioni che Jessica Mindich riceve da tutto il mondo. Un modo creativo per opporsi alla guerra,alle armi ed alla violenza che causano stragi in America, reinventando e trasformando un simbolo negativo in qualcosa di positivo.

Of many collaboration in the fashion industry, the one between a mayor and a jewellery designer is surely the most unexpected one. From 2009, Cory Booker, Newark's mayor (New Jersey) announced that he would have collected guns,bullets and rifles to fight against weapon's liberalization in the US: anyone could exchange any weapon for 200 $. The operation was very successful and between 350 and 400 weapons were collected, all gauges, so that a stock was created. But the collaboration started when he met Jessica Mindich, an ex-lawyer who is now a jewellery designer with her own brand “Jewellery for a cause”, who already donates for each selling 20% of the earning to an ONG or to other charity associations. She would have melt the stock to create jewels, and donate a part of the profit to “The Gun Buyback Amnesty Program”, Newark's association. That's how “The Caliber Collection” was born, a series of minimalistic bracelets in golden,silver or with a little diamond, with the name of the city “Newark” carved inside and the serial number of the weapon it was made of. The collection was so successful that Jessica Mindich has thousands of orders all around the world and four other cities in the USA are willing to do the same. This is a creative way to fight against war, weapons and violence that are causing so many slaughters right now, by turning something negative into something positive.
