Daily Paper x David Alabo T-shirt capsule collection
The Ghanaian artist designed a few illustrations inspired by tarot cards
March 26th, 2020
For its Spring 2020 collection, the Dutch brand Daily Paper collaborated with Ghanaian artist David Alabo who created a series of abstract 3D illustrations inspired by tarot cards decorating five of the t-shirts in the collection. Alabo's artworks rework the iconography linked to the African continent in the light of a surrealist aesthetic that, in honour of the spirit of the tarot cards, hides behind each graphic detail a spiritual meaning. Here's how the artist talked about the collection:
Daily Paper is dedicated to promoting African culture by honoring the past and its influence on their vision of the future. They push the boundaries and challenge the perception of Africa in the fashion world which is what I aim to achieve in the art world too. It just makes sense that we work together and inspire each other.
The six tarot cards that have been made the protagonists of the capsule are the Magician, the Hierophant and the High Priestess, the Emperor and the Empress. Each encompasses a special meaning: the Bagatto represents the spiritual development and the infinity of life beyond death, the Papessa represents the wisdom acquired after the sufferings that allow us to look to the future, the Pope is instead the tradition and the wisdom that they try to interpret reality, the Empress represents the female strength and the bond with the ancestors while the Emperor represents the loneliness and dangers of power.
All five t-shirts from the Daily Paper x David Alabo capsule collection are available online on the brand's official website at a retail price of 60€ each.
