December 29th, 2016
We're almost at the end of 2016 and it's time to draw conclusions about the most meaningful trends this year. We all agree that the revival of vintage sportswear is maybe one of the most popular, loved and suggested trends of 2016.
Hands up who didn't dust off his old Champion's hoodies! As I suspected, none of you. We are all guilty, this year we have all been victims of nostalgic charm of sportswear brands, which have played an important role in the streetwear during Eighties and Nineties.
It's impossible to resist the call of sporty vintage. Even the coolest fashion brands of the moments were not immune to the charm of the iconic sport garments, the same that many of you wore usually during gym class at high school. In fact, the 2016 has saw the rise of a lot of collaborations who restored some historic sportswear brands like Fila, Champion and Kappa.
I know, many of you are now regretting to throw away all those old tracksuits, with which you went to school in the Nineties. Don't worry, during 2016, some of your favourite brands when you were kids are back in great style by relaunching some of their most iconic garments. So, belowe there are the five vintage sporty items re-edited in 2016.
#1 The Sergio Tacchini's Polo
The famous brand who has been synonym of sport and Made in Italy for decades, combining the passion for tennis to Italian sartorial high-quality, in 2016 launched a capsule collection to celebrate the brand's first fifty years. The collection proposes the 50th Anniversary Polo, a reissue of the iconic Young Line, the Sergio Tacchini's polo led to the success thanks to John McEnroe.
#2 The Reebok's Question Mid
To celebrate the twenty years of iconic Question Mid, created in collaboration with the basket player Allen Iverson, Reebok launched a re-edition of the sneakers. The model is named “The Prototype” and it was initially designed before the partnership between the basket player and the brand was real. Not only that, in February Reebok also reiterated the popular “Red Toe” Question Mid OG.
#3 The Kappa's tracksuits
The cult Nineties Italian brand returned in 2016 by reintroducing a nostalgic mix of its iconic garments.
T-shirts with the unique logo and, above all, the iconic tracksuits, including the track pants with the “branded” side strips. In particular, last summer Kappa designed a capsule collection for the UK by proposing a streetwear line who contains all the brand's sporting spirit and coolness.
#4 The Champion's Reverse Weave
Demna Gvasalia has already thought to relaunch the American brand, but Champion is doing well even on its own. A few months ago, the sportswear brand revealed its SS17 collection, which includes its famous Reverse Weave hoodies with the iconic brand logo. The garments are designed in standard colors like grey, white and dark navy, and in new pastel tones. For this re-edition there are also “Californian Palm Spring” prints, dyed-effect and hand-made drawed garments, to give a vintage mood to the collection.
#5 The Fila's Settanta Track Jacket
For the last FW16 collection, the renowned Italian brand, which is back in the news definitively thanks to Gosha Rubchinskiy, relaunched its popular track jackets, introduced nearly 40 years ago, but still much-loved. The item comes in a variety of colors like bright green, light blue, navy and creamy-white.
