Despite Chanel’s Cuba show-event organised at the same time, the MET Gala managed to monopolise the international media attention again. The event, sponsored by Anna Wintour in order to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York, has officially inaugurated the exhibition Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, a retrospective which celebrates technology in the history of high fashion.

For this edition, the role of honorary chair was entrusted to Taylor Swift, while the co-hosts were British actor Idris Elba (Mandela, Avengers, Star Trek Beyond) and Jonathan Ive, Apple's chief design officer.

(Almost) everyone walked the red carpet: Kanye West & Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik, FKA Twigs & Robert Pattinson, Florence Welch, Tavi Gevinson, Chloe Sevigny, Stacy Martin, Madonna, Kristen Stewart, Selena Gomez, Grimes, Rita Ora, Uma Thurman, Dakota Johnson, Zoe Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, Elle and Dakota Fanning, Lucky Blue Smith and his sister Pyper America, Katy Perry, Lorde, the Olsen twins, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Alexa Chung, Lady Gaga , Jaden and Willow Smith, Kylie and Kendall Jenner with mom Kris, the Haim, Emma Roberts, Lily-Rose Depp (without dad Johnny and mom Vanessa Paradis) and Beyoncé (without Jay Z).

As usual, the charity cause moved to the background, leaving the clothes the role of authentic protagonists of the night. Many exaggerated – see Kanye West with blue contact lenses and his wife wrapped in a silver sequined dress, one size smaller – and others have worn a gown by the brand for which they are ambassador – see ethereal Florence Welch in Gucci by Alessandro Michele and Léa Seydoux in a sophisticated Louis Vuitton black dress by Nicolas Ghesquière.

Among the big absents of the night, Rihanna. Maybe she wanted to avoid looking like a huge omelette again...
