The sacrifices of the stars for the Met Gala
Kim Kardashian remains the undisputed queen of the most drastic style choices
May 3rd, 2024
There are those who appreciate beauty in worldliness and those who still respect the famous saying "Beauty is pain." In the case of the Met Gala, it's hard for the former to prevail over the obligatory breathtaking looks of the invited celebrities. Over the years, the event organized by Anna Wintour every first Monday of May has witnessed some of the most radical and dramatic stylistic choices in history, evolving from a simple gala dinner among famous people to a real show. We still remember the 2019 red carpet performance by Lady Gaga, who changed into three different looks in a matter of moments, or the feline look of Doja Cat last year. There are celebrities who, on the occasion of the Met, resort to drastic, sometimes dangerous measures just to present themselves in a stunning look. Let's see together which ones are the best.
If there's one family that always manages to end up in the gossip spotlight, it's definitely the Kardashian-Jenner clan. For years present at the Met Gala, all of momager Kris Jenner's daughters have managed to leave their mark on impressive looks, including the second-to-last one of Kim Kardashian, who to fit into the exact vintage dress in which in 1962 Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday" to then-President of the United States John F. Kennedy, underwent extreme weight loss. Or the 2019 outfit created by Mugler maison, a bodycon dress inspired by Sophia Loren's wet shirt in Boy on a Dolphin that prevented the star from sitting all evening, as it required a very tight corset. Among the sisters, we recall two extreme fashion moments: when Kendall Jenner had to urinate in a bucket on the way from the hotel to the Met Museum in 2022, a moment recorded and aired on the reality series about the lives of influencers, and when that same year Kourtney Kardashian was sewn into her skirt by the Thom Browne tailoring team.
In the case of Zendaya, attending the Met Gala once turned into an athletic feat. In 2018, for Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, the actress collaborated with Versace to create an armor that evoked the image of the saint Joan of Arc. The outfit was made of silver chains and was quite heavy, so much so that the star of Challengers still remembers the effort of climbing the Met stairs - she was also wearing heels. Similarly, in 2021 Olympic athlete Simone Biles wore a 40-kilogram dress by Area, a silver structure covered in crystals. Of all these transformations undergone by celebrities to fit into the look set by their stylists for the Met, there are also minor efforts, such as Harry Styles who pierced his earlobe to wear a Gucci earring in 2019 - proof that even though "beauty is pain," the pain spoken of can be bearable.
