A review of the singer's most iconic looks
June 28th, 2024
Lauryn Hill will soon make a spectacular return to Paris. The legendary singer will reunite the Fugees for a special concert at l'Accor Arena on October 18, 2024. This performance will mark a double celebration: the much-anticipated reunion of the iconic group and the 25th anniversary of Lauryn Hill's solo landmark album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. On stage, the New York icon will be joined by Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, reuniting the legendary trio. The audience will have the chance to rediscover the timeless classics that established the Fugees' fame, such as “Fu-Gee-La”, “Ready or Not”, and “Killing Me Softly With His Song”. It's a night that promises to be unforgettable for longtime fans and new admirers alike. A rising star will open the show, and not just any star. YG Marley, the eldest son of the singer and grandson of the legend Bob Marley, who recently made a sensational debut in the industry with over a billion streams on his first single titled “Praise Jah in the Moonlight”. On this occasion, we have decided to do a retrospective of the singer's best looks throughout her career.
New York at Heart
Lauryn Hill expertly embodies the New York style of the 90s here. During this shoot with Lisa Leone in Harlem alongside her cousin Wyclef Jean, the R&B legend presents an iconic cultural look with these Beige Timberlands 6, Baggy jeans, and a plaid shirt under her big leather aviator jacket to combat the New York winter.
Her Taste for Maximalism
The singer has always been bold in her outfits. On June 11, 2023, at the Adidas x Hip Hop anniversary, she showcased an eclectic, maximalist-themed outfit. An extravagantly layered look, with an oversized pink blazer by Act N.1 featuring an impressive ruffled trim and high-low details. She paired it with a black sweatshirt underneath, high-heeled boots by Amina Muaddi, and a New York Yankees snapback. Under the cap, her braids were adorned with multicolored beads. A combination hard to imagine yet so well executed.
Simplicity in Extravagance
Surprisingly, she also manages to appear understated in a long nude dress adorned with matching gold accessories. This might be one of the R&B legend's strengths, bringing a fresh tone to flashy outfits. She appeared in this look in 1991 during the 33rd Grammy Awards, photographed by James Devaney.
Layering and Style Fusion
Who said you can't merge elegance and streetwear? With this look, an unexpected marriage of styles comes to life: an oversized light blue baseball jacket paired with a long flowy skirt and a matching red scarf. What might seem like a fashion disaster turns out to be a harmonious blend of femininity and sport. Lauryn brilliantly proves that these two worlds are not incompatible but complement each other perfectly. She wore this outfit at the 1998 Billboard Awards at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The Cut is Part of the Look
The Hip-Hop star has not lost her love for fashion over the years and knows how to reinvent herself while keeping her unique traits. On June 3, 2023, Hill took the stage at the Mann Center for The Roots Picnic dressed in an all-black gown adorned with precious stones, complemented by an immense green cape and an angular hairstyle. Her natural hair was partially pinned up and sculpted (or perhaps cut) into a large ascending gradient, with a lock of hair taken off to one side of the flat top. The top of her hairstyle was very geometric and structured, while the bottom fell freely, evoking a semi-voluminous afro look.
