All the vintage looks of the Oscars 2023
Actresses who chose archive fashion, from Cate Blanchett to Vanessa Hudgens
March 13th, 2023
Last night saw the Oscars, one of the most eagerly awaited annual events for film and fashion fans from all around the the world. This time, the red carpet - a surprisingly white, bare pavement - of the Academy Awards witnessed an abundance of white dresses, such as Tems' voluminous gown designed by a Ukrainian designer and Emily Blunt's Valentino minimal dress, and a notable presence of vintage looks. Despite the fact that fashion month has just ended, many celebrities have in fact chosen to dredge up - on the advice of their stylists - archival looks, demonstrating Hollywood's newly found interest in sustainable fashion.
Leading the way in this trend was Cate Blanchett, nominated for Best Leading Actress for her role in Tár, who has many times before repurposed dresses and looks to red carpet events. Last night she appeared in front of photographers in a metallic blue Louis Vuitton vintage top draped over vertiginous 80s shoulders, and a tailored skirt made with sustainable silk. Rooney Mara opted for a romantic empire style gown whose train was tied at the feet, designed by Alexander McQueen for FW2008's "The girl who lived in the tree" collection, and Vanessa Hudgens, who wore a black sheath dress with ankle-length white hems, evoked a style straight from the 1960s with a vintage Chanel look, even through a geometric-design manicure and a bow-shaped gel hairstyle. American supermodel Winnie Harlow, on the other hand, dared with acid yellow, wearing an Armani fitted mermaid-skirt dress from 2005, decorated with a zip and a sequin flower appliqué on the left shoulder; a look Harlow decided to accompany with lots of diamonds and gathering her hair into a messy bun.
Even at Vanity Fair's afterparty red carpet some Hollywood stars went for a vintage look: actress Kerry Washington, star of the series Scandal and the film Django Unchained, wore a nude, low-cut, gathered dress from the Donna Karan archive, and model and TV star Kendall Jenner wore a dress decorated with golden petals, part of Jean Paul Gaultier's SS2008 couture collection.
