Kanye West is building public housing in California
The new project by Yeezy Home seems inspired by the architecture of Star Wars

Back in May 2018, Kanye West wrote on his Twitter that he was looking for architects and industrial designers for YEEZY Home, a new leg of his famous brand dedicated to the development of social housing. The purpose? The rapper and businessman wanted to try to bridge the gap between the different social and income classes by creating affordable housing. Now, about a year later, TMZ unveiled images of the first buildings designed by the artist together with Jalil Peraza and Petra Kustin.
These are some prefabricated dome structures, made of wood and about 50 feet high distributed on the 300-acre plot that West bought in Calabasas a few years ago. It seems that Kanye opted for this kind of futuristic design after examining and studying various man-made homes with his team throughout history. Looking at the images of the project, it seemed obvious to many people that it was similar to the buildings of Tatooine, the home planet of the legendary Luke Skywalker of Star Wars.
The inspiration was confessed some time ago by the artist himself interviewed by Forbes. Journalist Zack O'Malley Greenburg, one of the few to have seen a preview of Calabasas' houses, describes them as follows:
A trio of structures that look like the skeletons of wooden spaceships. They’re the physical prototypes of his concept, each oblong and dozens of feet tall, and West leads me inside each one. He tells me they could be used as living spaces for the homeless, perhaps sunk into the ground with light filtering in through the top.
Kanye West's passion for architecture, particularly the most austere and brutalist, is now well-known, as are his political aspirations. Yeezy Home could embody the perfect marriage of the two worlds and, if his social housing project works, it could bring him a little closer to a job at the White House. In the meantime, Kim Kardashian is already training as a lawyer and human rights defender. Will they be the next presidential couple? Only time will tell.
