Do we hate River Island's mannequins cause they're just like us?
Goth, hangover and selfie-addicted
October 28th, 2016
The internet is literally freaking out over River Island’s mannequins. Why? Well, cause they’re too ‘goth’, ‘emo’, ‘depressed’, ‘hangover’. Many words have been spent and one thing is for sure: people didn’t like them at all.
The much talked about mannequins sport a heavy black makeup and don’t look like they’re exactly alright. When they’re not posing “like they’re hangover in the shower thinking about their life choices” – as author Sarah Griffith pointed out on Twitter –, the mannequins are holding up their smartphones taking selfies.
To the critics, River Island responded by saying that it wants to keep its shopping experience “fresh and different”. Well, it sure is different. What about fresh, though? When did stores decide to stop selling a dream for the sake of showing us a – un-healthy – copy of ourselves? Maybe River Island made the mistake of going a bit to real this time and maybe, just maybe, the reason why it broke the Internet over the last few hours, generating a wave of hate, is also that the selfie-taking mannequins remind us (the millennials) of ourselves a bit too much.
