Diet Prada calls out Virgil Abloh on his collaboration with IKEA

The 'police' of cultural appropriation and of the copy have struck again.

This time MARKERAD, the collection created by Virgil Abloh in collaboration with IKEA, is in the crosshairs of Diet Prada.

In particular, according to the Instagram duo, a chair created by the designer of Off-White seems almost identical to another by Paul McCobb for his series Planner Group.

Observing the images in comparison, the similarity seems undeniable and Abloh's statement released to present the object sounds rather ironic.

The man, together with the creative leader of IKEA Henrik Most, said:

“It wouldn’t really make sense to introduce another chair as a kind of replica of something that has already been done, if we want to reinterpret the design history we need to twist it, we need to take it to another level and make it more relevant for today. That’s why I try to embed an artistic quality in things that you already have. So the chair has elevated because it feels more like an art object than a typical chair that just serves it functions with four equal legs.” 

For the uninitiated, McCobb's chair is a mid-century design icon.

Neither Abloh nor Ikea have responded, until now, to the "accusations" of Diet Prada. What do you guys think?
