Austin Butler will be Patrick Bateman in the American Psycho remake Written and directed by Luca Guadagnino

After Elvis and Dune, it seems that Austin Butler’s new role will be that of the beloved Patrick Bateman in the new interpretation of American Psycho, directed by Luca Guadagnino. Last October, the announcement of the remake of the cult film from the 2000s garnered a lot of attention. Although Jacob Elordi’s name was mentioned several times in casting rumors – partly due to his resemblance to a young Christian Bale – last night Variety reported Lionsgate's final decision, the studio producing the film. According to what emerged last October, when the project was announced, the new American Psycho will not be a 1:1 remake of Mary Harron’s film but a reinterpretation of the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis. Butler, who previously caused a stir on social media for his (perhaps excessive) method acting in his performance as Elvis, represents a new addition to the so-called “Guadagnino Cinematic Universe.” Hopefully, this time the actor won’t take the character too seriously.

The reactions from the public on social media have been mixed: some are not excited about Austin Butler, while others complain about the lack of open casting calls in Hollywood. After all, for Christian Bale, Patrick Bateman was the breakthrough role that catapulted the English actor into the “Hall of Fame” of the film industry. Looking at the new film, it is clear that the idea of transporting the *American Psycho* universe into the Gen Z culture almost naturally associates the comedy-horror protagonist with Jacob Elordi. Indeed, his role as Nate Jacobs in Euphoria clearly demonstrates how skilled he is at playing characters with narcissistic traits. At the same time, Butler’s recent performances have not only been critically acclaimed but have also won over skeptics. For now, little is known about the production start date, especially since Luca Guadagnino – one of the busiest directors in recent years – has just wrapped filming After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. Furthermore, Guadagnino has been busy for months with the press tour for his latest film, Queer, which will hit Italian theaters on Valentine’s Day. It’s clear when someone truly loves their work.
