Temu overtakes Vinted in the ranking of sites most visited by the French When Chinese giants shake up the French e-commerce market

The Chinese e-commerce platform Temu continues its meteoric rise, strengthening its position on the global stage, particularly in France. On Monday, November 18, the Fevad (French E-commerce Federation) published the ranking of the audience in the Île-de-France region for the top twenty e-commerce websites across all sectors, on desktop, mobile, and tablet for this quarter. Behind e-commerce giants such as Amazon, Le BonCoin, and Booking, Temu ranks 4th with an average of 18,390,000 visitors per month. The Chinese marketplace gained three positions this period, placing it ahead of Vinted, which had 17,300,000 monthly unique visitors. E.Leclerc, Lidl, Carrefour, and Cdiscount follow these two sites in terms of traffic. The fast fashion site Shein maintains its 10th place with 14.9 million monthly visitors and an impressive 3.7 million daily visitors. Right behind, Aliexpress records 14.2 million monthly visitors and 2.2 million daily visitors.

This ranking illustrates the rise of Chinese companies, which are no longer mere alternatives but are now asserting themselves as major competitors to global giants like Amazon. As for Vinted, which is having a successful year with a 61% growth in 2024, it continues to establish itself solidly in France despite increasing competition. The success of these e-commerce sites in France is mainly due to their very low prices. In fact, in an inflationary environment, French consumers are increasingly turning to Chinese low-cost platforms to ease their wallets. The crisis also benefits Vinted, which allows users to resell unused clothing to make extra money.

Despite the success of these platforms, Amazon remains at the top with 50,000,000 average monthly unique visitors and 8,500,000 daily visitors. These impressive numbers prove the enormity of Jeff Bezos' multinational. However, Chinese companies are shaking up this status quo, adding pressure to the cutthroat online retail landscape. The main challenge for Temu, Shein, and Aliexpress lies in their delivery times, which are significantly longer than those of their Western competitors. If these platforms can overcome this constraint, it could lead to a significant shift in online shopping habits.
