The Moulin Rouge is finally getting its wings back
A symbol of Parisian resilience, they will be reinstalled in July
June 4th, 2024
The Moulin Rouge has had a rich and tumultuous history since its creation in 1889. It has survived two world wars and numerous economic crises, but it has always managed to reinvent itself and remain at the peak of its glory. Among its adventures, one stands out on the night of April 24-25, an unexpected event: its iconic wings, a symbol of Paris and its joie de vivre, detached from the façade. This incident, fortunately without injury, sparked strong emotions among Parisians and tourists from around the world. Nevertheless, Paris can now smile again, as the famous cabaret is set to regain its former appearance. In early July, a new pair of wings, identical to the old ones, will be installed ahead of the passage of the Olympic flame on July 15, 2024.

The Moulin Rouge, with its sparkling red wings and its french-cancan show, immortalized by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso, is one of Paris's most iconic monuments. Since 1889, it has attracted visitors from around the world, fascinated by its glamorous atmosphere and festive spirit. The fall of the wings was thus a real blow to the cabaret and the entire city. In the days following the incident, an investigation was conducted to determine the cause of the wings' fall. The hypothesis of malicious intent was quickly dismissed in favor of a technical issue, likely related to the wear of the metal structure supporting the wings. Determined to regain its former glory before the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, the Moulin Rouge management immediately launched restoration work. A crane was installed to facilitate the lifting of the new wings, identical to the old ones in terms of materials and lighting. The metal structure was also renovated to prevent such an incident from happening again.
A symbolic return before the Olympics
The new wings of the Moulin Rouge will be reinstalled by early July, as confirmed by the cabaret's management. They will be ready for the passage of the Olympic flame in front of the monument on July 15. This symbolic return marks the end of a difficult period for the institution and for the city of Paris. It also represents a message of hope and resilience, demonstrating the French capital's ability to recover after trials, even if they seem to multiply ahead of the Olympic Games. The return of its wings is therefore good news for all lovers of the French capital and its cultural heritage. By turning the page on this dark chapter of its history, the Moulin Rouge is ready to face the future with optimism and continue to make generations dream.
