On the eve of one of the most eagerly-awaited charity events of the year, find out what to expect.
May 14th, 2024
Each year, alongside the Cannes Film Festival, amfAR orchestrates an event that is both prestigious and philanthropic: its famous charity gala. Amidst the sequins and glamour of La Croisette, this event embodies an unwavering commitment to the fight against AIDS. Since its founding in 1985, amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research) has established itself as one of the driving forces in global research against this devastating disease. Its mission is to accelerate research to end the epidemic, while raising public awareness and influencing public health policies. With nearly 635 million dollars invested and over 3,800 grants awarded to research teams, its impact is undeniable.
The amfAR Gala, initiated in 1993 by Dame Elizabeth Taylor, has become a staple of the festival. Beyond its glamorous aspect, this evening is a true showcase of solidarity, where the funds raised support crucial medical advances and vital prevention programs. Driven by the presence of influential celebrities and well-endowed philanthropists, this gala transcends the boundaries of entertainment to become a symbol of hope and mobilization.
As usual, this event, considered one of the most prestigious and anticipated of the festival week, will be held at l'Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, an iconic venue known for its luxury and glamour, on May 23rd. Last year, Queen Latifah presided over the ceremony, and this year, it is the actress Demi Moore who succeeds her, marking her return after nearly three decades as host of the event. The red carpet will be animated by actress Bella Thorne. The musical highlights of the evening will feature performances by Nick Jonas and the icon Cher. At 77, the latter, who had previously co-chaired the gala with Elizabeth Taylor in 1996 and received the amfAR Inspiration Award in 2015, has expressed her pride in returning to support this cause. An essential part of the amfAR Gala is the auction led by the famous auctioneer Simon de Pury. The auction will include luxury lots, exclusive experiences, and artworks, offering guests the opportunity to contribute to a noble cause while acquiring unique items. Finally, the annual fashion show orchestrated by fashion doyenne Carine Roitfeld will feature creations from the world's top designers, adding an extra touch of glamour to this already bustling evening. To close the event with music, it will be DJ and producer Diplo who will keep the guests dancing into the early hours.
