Margot Robbie will produce a movie based on The Sims
Will she be able to replicate the success of Barbie?
March 25th, 2024
It was even 2007 when there was talk of a cinematic adaptation of The Sims, the video game series created by Will Wright and produced by Electronic Arts. Most probably, considering the historical period, it would have been a success: at the time, The Sims was one of the most famous console chapters, and not by chance, it is still today the best-selling video game series worldwide on PC. The cinematic adaptation was supposed to be done by Fox: unfortunately, the project ended up in oblivion, not before remaining on standby until 2019. The strength of The Sims has always been the offer of an immersive experience, with the player being able to identify with their own avatar, a gameplay mode then replicated by many other production houses. According to the latest news reported by Variety and by the Los Angeles Times, a new cinematic adaptation of The Sims is in the works under the film company LuckyChap, owned by Margot Robbie, her husband Tom Ackerly, Josey McNamara, and Sophia Kerr, in collaboration with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Additionally, Electronic Arts will be involved creatively and productively.

Margot Robbie, who not only starred alongside Ryan Gosling in Barbie, was one of the producers of the film with LuckyChap. The film ensured an important loot (around 50 million euros) to the 33-year-old Australian, who chose to ride the wave of cinematic adaptations. Just like The Sims, indeed, Barbie is an important and famous product of pop culture that over the years has undergone numerous adaptations, including 18 video games, numerous singles, and much more. Barbie was born in 1959 as a doll game, therefore, exactly like The Sims, it does not have a narrative structure, but leaves the player the full freedom to write a plot, drawing a world with the use of imagination. The success of Barbie could therefore have marked a turning point in Margot Robbie's career, who probably, for the upcoming projects, could choose to focus more on the role of entrepreneur producing films with LuckyChap than on the role of an actress. Just a few months ago, Margot Robbie had told Deadline in an interview, «They're probably all tired of seeing me,» alluding to a possible withdrawal from the spotlight due to overexposure in the media.
