Drake just inaugurated an amusement park
It's called "Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy," and it has reopened after almost 40 years
December 18th, 2023
After about 40 years, the doors of Luna Luna, one of the most unique amusement parks ever, showcasing works and rides by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dalì, and Keith Haring, have been reopened. Thanks to an operation orchestrated by Heller's children and DreamCrew, the entertainment company that includes Drake, the works that once stood in Germany and were stored in 44 containers in a Texas area for years have been transferred to a warehouse in Los Angeles. Already in 2022, there were discussions about a modernization that would give a new life to Luna Luna, but the seemingly utopian project became a reality only this weekend. The investments - totaling approximately $100 million - have allowed Luna Luna to reopen after many years under the name of Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy. Inaugurated on Thursday, the park has already been visited by celebrities like Giveon, Shay Mitchell, and Martine Syms.
Unfortunately, the new Luna Luna installation won't feature the old rides created by Basquiat, Dalì, and Haring, which now occupy an area of about 60,000 square meters. The amusement park's history dates back to 1987 when the multidisciplinary artist André Heller decided to create a unique location. The peculiarity of Luna Luna, in fact, was to be a true interactive exhibition of artworks created by world-renowned artists. Luna Luna soon met an unhappy fate: born in Hamburg with the intention of becoming a traveling project, the park was nipped in the bud due to various disputes. The Hamburg edition remained the only one, and Luna Luna became a place that decayed in no time. Despite four decades passing, the minds behind the project never lost hope, and this week they have finally been able to embrace it again in Los Angeles.
For those wondering how to visit Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy, DreamCrew has announced that the space «is only the first installation of a long-term project that aims to explore art and its intersection with today's world.» The statement indicates that the amusement park can finally pursue its original dream of becoming a traveling project, albeit transforming into a distinctly cultural place, a true open-air museum. Most likely, the new stops of Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy will take place in the spring of 2024.
