Before legal streaming and binge watching, an entire generation was getting movies and music through a series of programs based on the peer-to-peer mechanism. eMule and Bearshare were just two of the faithful allies in the constant updating of music libraries and in the hunt for the latest episode of the series of the moment, all well before realities like Netflix or Spotify made piracy just a memory for most of us. Today, however, one of those names so dear to Millennials is ready to return in a new guise: In fact, LimeWire has announced its imminent return no longer as a peer-to-peer client, but as a "mainstream-ready digital collectibles marketplace."

LimeWire 2.0 will be for all intents and purposes an online platform to buy NFT, giving its users the chance to get their hands on unreleased demos, exclusive live recordings and backstage content, focusing primarily on music collectibles and then expanding its focus to other areas of art and entertainment. Contrary to its original version, the new platform will work directly with artists to create and sell content, allowing users to purchase content without having to use a crypto wallet and relying directly on traditional systems.

Officially launched in May 2000, LimeWire stood out from the competition with some unique features, such as an internal chat and built-in iTunes support. In 2010, however, the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America, had obtained a ruling to cease "search, download, upload, file exchange and/or file distribution functionality" for copyright infringement, announcing its intention to seek compensation for damages caused to record labels. Although the news of its return ignites a certain nostalgia factor, this new iteration of LimeWire is a far cry from the one remembered by some, a cross and delight for downloads but above all a cluster of viruses ready to settle your computer.
