Decoding Vetements SS17 collection
@ Galeries Lafayette, Paris
Paris. Rue de la Chaussée d'Antin. Galeries Lafayette. In front of an audience of adoring fashionistas – including Justin Bieber – Vetements deconstructs the concept of couture.
Demna Gvasalia, also Balenciaga’s creative director and cult designer of the moment, boosts the concept of collective to the maximum working together with 18 brands.
The idea? Taking the iconic piece of every brand and put it into a Vetements frame, whether in terms of shape or construction.
The talented artist draws from their know-how, chooses their best products and manipulates them, transforming them through Vetements’ unconventional codes in something brave, unique, cool.
From Dr. Martens to Reebok, from Carhartt to Brioni, from Levi's to Comme des Garçons Shirt, every company bends and shapes the will of the Georgian designer, his creativity, his mad vions enough to convince even Manolo Blahnik, willing to wash, boil or burn his famous shoes. Juicy Couture reworks its famous velvet suits into evening gowns. Alpha Industries expands the bombers’ proportions, Brioni tailored suits become over-sized while Blahnik creates unisex satin boots high up to the hips.
The result is a series of eclectic, borderline, brave clothing and accessories, reminiscent of Martin Margiela’s style.
