All you need to know about Gosha Rubchinskiy
Waiting for his next show at Pitti Uomo
March 23rd, 2016
Gosha Rubchinskiy will be the next menswear guest designer for the 90th edition of Pitti Uomo in June. The Russian designer, famous for his post-Soviet streetwear style that reinvented fashion standards, is already thinking about his show in Florence and for the occasion he has something very special in mind.
Before him, Moschino, Hood By Air and Juun. J have already been guest designers during the Florentine event, which every year invites the most interesting fashion designers of the moment to show their latest collection exclusively.
Waiting for his Pitti's show, here is all you need to know about Gosha Rubchinskiy before his revolution lands in Italy.
#1 Background and first steps into fashion. At the age of 15, Gosha Rubchinskiy had already decided he wanted to work in fashion and appear on some cool magazines. So, after college, where he studied hair styling, make-up and styling, he moved to Moscow in order to enter the fashion scene of the capital. After five years, in 2008, he founded his brand, printed t-shirts and hoodies basically, and in 2009 he launched his first collection named Evil Empire, inspired by his skater friends.
#2 Not only fashion. Gosha Rubchinskiy is not only a fashion designer, but a multifaceted artist. In fact, his interests range from photography to video making, and his collections often make reference to cultural and artistic movements. For examples, his references to artist Aleksandr Rodchenkoand and the capsule collection inspired by Timur Novikov.
#3 Collaborations. Gosha Rubchinskiy has collaborated with two streetwear big brand as Vans and Reebok, with whom he designed some sneakers. The designer also appeared as model during Vetements' show – with whom Gosha Rubchinskiy shares stylist Lotta Volkova.
#4 The partnership with Comme des Garçons. Not everyone knows that Comme des Garçons handles all Gosha Rubchinskiy's aspects, including production, marketing, distribution and sales. The partnership between CdG and Gosha Rubchinskiy started when former Russian Vogue fashion editor Anna Dyulgerova introduced the designer to Adrian Joffe, President of Comme des Garçons and mastermind at Dover Street Market, as well as Rei Kawakubo's husband, who was in Moscow.
Joffe was so impressed with the designer that proposed him a collection for DSM. The rest is history: Joffe registered Gosha Rubchinskiy trademark, which debuted during Paris Fashion Week SS15. Fun fact: during Gosha Rubchinskiy's latest show, Rei Kawakubo was seated front row. Exceptional fact considering that she seems to be allergic to journalists and social events.
#5 What will happen in June? In a chat with Business of Fashion, Gosha Rubchinskiy has revealed his show for Pitti Uomo will be something unexpected. At the same time, the designer will also launch a video and a book (preceded by the other two Youth Hotel and Transfiguration). About this, Adrian Joffe adds: “It’s going to be about Italian history and bringing Russia to Italy, the story of how he loves the buildings and filmmakers of Italy and how he wants this to meet this thing from Russia”.
