The new feminism of the Pirelli Calendar 2016
By Annie Leibovitz

Only few months ago the Palazzo Reale in Milan hosted a retrospective dedicated to the history of the Pirelli Calendar: The Cal. From Richard Avedon to Peter Lindberg, from Bruce Weber to Terry Richardson, the images illustrated clearly the strong erotic imaginary which has always characterized the calendar since its debut, in 1964.
In a time of fight for equal rights and new feminist outburst, even this cult object decided to renovate itself making way to photographs which embody a new ideal of woman: intellectual, self-confident of proud of her talents.
The shots have of course been realized by a woman – Annie Leibovitz – and immortalize some of the most iconic feminine personalities of our times: Patti Smith, Tavi Gevinson and Yoko Ono are just some of them.
An aesthetic revolution with a marked conceptual background, which aims to sensitize the viewer against the exploitation of the woman’s body.
