meet the artist behind Gucci's Shanghai exhibition
October 15th, 2015
Unskilled Worker is one of those names to follow on Instagram. His profile is populated by a series of paintings that, thanks to the iPhone, live a digital life, imperfect fashion creatures that fascinate, acclaimed with lots of like.
Behind this worker without academic background hides a fifty-year-old artist based in London, Helen Downie, who, after facing drugs and cancer, found her strength in painting.
In a few years his work has garnered over 183,000 followers, including Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s new creative director. And it is working with him that Unskilled Worker touched the top of her creativity:"The work of Alessandro is magical. It makes me want to create, create an answer to his vision" said Downie, reciprocated by Michele who says "What I liked of the style of Unskilled Worker is a kind of fairy-tale innocence, that she inserts in her illustrations. They are so naive, yet captivating. I was immediately captured after seeing her Instagram. I love her and what she does".
Seeing is believing.
