Renzo Rosso is proud of Galliano and Maison Margiela
John Galliano is a real pro
June 4th, 2015
Time inexorably passes and while great feats are celebrated in a nostalgic way, it also happens that gaffes and mistakes of the past slip slowly away from the memories, leaving behind them essentially little halos.
This is what happened to John Galliano: the awkward event is now distant in memories. February 2011, Paris. The designer was in a club and - visibly drunk - he heavily insulted a Jewish couple, praising the figure of Hitler. From this moment, the descent into hell: he was fired from Dior and started a period of rehabilitation which will run for four years.
Undeniable talent wasted? Exuberant personality modified and shaped? Sunset of a long and acclaimed career in the fashion biz?
On the contrary.
On October 2014 - after a period at Oscar de la Renta - Renzo Rosso, owner of Diesel, and chairman and main shareholder of the OTB Group, chose Galliano as the new creative director of Maison (Martin) Margiela. After the enormous initial amazement and the doubts about the apparent incompatibility between the personality of Galliano with the minimalism of Margiela, here comes the acceptance and the enthusiasm by critics and audiences.
A brand new phase for John Galliano, as well as for Maison Margiela, both sharing a substantial break with their past.
Today, making a balance of the period spent by Galliano at the head of the Maison, Renzo Rosso is more and more satisfied with his choice: "John is a real pro, I am so happy to have him. He is a not a designer but a couturier and has great pyramidal thinking - turning couture concepts into ready-to-wear clothing and accessories".
Apparently, the presence of Galliano gave a new impetus to the brand, not only in terms of design, but above all from an economic perspective. Rosso said sales were already up 20 percent at the fashion house even though only a few of Galliano's pieces had so far reached the shelves. Sales at Margiela now exceeded 100 million euros.
Fashion business has forgiven Galliano. Renzo Rosso is proud of the work of Galliano. The audience is getting used to the new Galliano's presence...and the same Martin Margiela is enthusiastic about Galliano at the head of the brand he founded in 1988.
So, all's well that ends well.
