Watch the trailer for the new Martin Margiela documentary
April 21st, 2015
Yoox presents "The Artist is Absent: A Short Film On Martin Margiela", a documentary about the mysterious figure of the Belgian designer.
Directed by Alison Chernick, this project comes shortly after the release of "Dior and I" and before the expected video portrait of Iris Apfel. 2015 is the year of fashion documentaries.
"The Artist Is Absent", however, is a challenge.
How tell the story of a man always remained in the shadows, a figure deliberately shrouded in mystery? Through a video of his shows, chosen from a list of names suggested by the same Margiela to the director.
There are Geert Bruloot, who first discovered his talent, but also Raf Simons.
Gaultier, who worked with Margiela between 1985 - 1987, describes it as follows: ""not influenced by the physique, but by the spirit. As a creator, as a designer, he is a genius." A label with no name and only a series of numbers inside.
It 's all here the philosophy of MMM. It's a conceptual code that revolutionized the history of fashion, fraying the hems, leaving the garments unfinished, unbalancing the proportions, using the upcycling.
Never interviewed or photographed, Martin Margiela has always promoted the cult of impersonality, becoming the anti-designer.
Alison Chernick's project is candidate in 2015 edition of the Tribeca Film Festival in the category of Best Short Documentary and its full version will be broadcast online from April 27.
