Maison Martin Margiela's Grid of Hands
June 26th, 2014
It was born to wonder, to shock us, to make us gape; to elevate fashion to that level of untouchable perfection that has always distinguished it from its first parade in 1988 till today.
Maison Martin Margiela's face is veiled, its identity is concealed by a desire to bypass the banality of trends driven by fashion carousel, looking for a totally other aesthetics and style.
Once again, the French fashion maison succeeds in its intent to convey its message, making it unique in its simplicity, consistent with its inscrutability: where others choose for the new season an enigmatic title and claim to be "the most appealing", MMM delegates to a member of the design team to bring back the past years and seasons of the shows on the palm of the hand and to record them with a Xerox. The result is a grid of handprints that trace the history of the fashion shows until 1998, receiving the "Loves vote" by the fashion coordinator of AnOther Magazine, Mhairi Graham.
From the first show, where the models' Tabi leaved red footprints on a white carpet destinated to become a coat for the next season, Margiela continues to astonish and seduce us with creations that are reminiscent of the purity of the past and a futuristic look to the future.
