2025 in trends, month by month
Fashion forecasts according to the Heuritech AI-driven platform
January 8th, 2025
January is a special month for fashion and for those who study it. Particularly for trend forecasters, analysts specialized in researching social and cultural phenomena and how these can influence runways and consumer tastes. Each year is marked by key events that can change people's preferences, whether positively (think of an economic boom) or negatively (such as a crisis). It's rare for the trends of a particular year to resemble those of the previous one: for this reason, in January, trend forecasters must be ready for anything. To celebrate the arrival of 2025, the AI-powered forecasting company Heuritech has prepared a trend calendar for the new year, analysing which items, patterns, or silhouettes consumers might prefer month by month.
According to Heuritech's analysis, the trends that caused a stir in 2024 included the leopard print, which saw a 128% increase in interest among European female consumers compared to the previous year (and promises a further 31% growth in the next twelve months), dark brown, which grew by 14% in the last quarter of the year, and gingham, up by 9%. Beyond patterns and colors, 2024 was also marked by the popularity of Mary Jane ballet flats, which saw a 65% increase in interest, and hot pants, which, despite their unusual look, attracted a 24% growth. For Heuritech, these three trends epitomise some of the most important phenomena of 2024, such as the much-discussed consumer fatigue, the shift towards minimalism, and the resulting crisis in luxury. In 2025, the company states, consumer attention will focus intensely on quality materials and color. Instead of straightforward minimalism, combinations of different textures and materials will be favoured, all with a much greater emphasis on sustainability. In times of crisis, Heuritech's study continues, qualities such as durability and craftsmanship will take precedence over passing fads, and tonal dressing (dressing in various shades of the same color) will be the dominant look of 2025.
Now that we've offered a brief and concise overview of 2024 and 2025, it's time to dive into the details and discover the trends that will color the next twelve months. In Heuritech's calendar, January will draw inspiration from the '90s and '70s to rediscover fur coats worn by stars in Fame and The Holiday. Adding both aesthetic value, through color and diverse textures, and functional value, by providing warmth, the long fur coat makes outfits interesting while protecting against the cold. Additionally, it perfectly aligns with Gen Z's interest in vintage fashion. Similarly, February's leading trend is expected to be animal prints, whether classic leopard, bold zebra, or spotted pony. Predictions suggest that leopard print may achieve a popularity growth of 84% in the first quarter of 2025, with animal prints appearing mainly on jackets (+60%) and midi skirts (+122%).
In March, as the first "warm" days arrive, it becomes the perfect time to showcase those mid-season coats that stay hidden in closets for much of the year. This is when suede, a trend on the rise for a year, will start to make noise again: according to Heuritech, the material that took the SS25 Fashion Week by storm will continue to captivate in the new year, appearing on loafers and coats (with popularity projected to increase by 35% and 77%). Gen Z will pay particular attention to wide-leg jeans (+30%) and maxi skirts (+24%) in suede, but strictly vintage. April is dedicated to a rather unexpected comeback: track pants. “In 2025,” comments Heuritech, «we will see a shift towards sports lifestyle, which will play a larger role in consumers' lives. Performance wear, once dark and strength-focused, is moving towards a palette of softer colors and shapes,» such as blush pink and sage green, expected to see increases in interest of 11% and 13%, even in menswear.
According to Heuritech's calendar, in May, consumers will explore a "new" silhouette. The Mandarin Collar is expected to see an 8% increase in interest, marking a new success for the classic lines of quiet luxury. June will observe a fresh wave of interest in boat shoes, a men's model already among the top summer trends, which is predicted to explode further this year. Among men, Heuritech anticipates that the shoe's popularity will grow by 63%, coinciding with a broader trend towards motifs and silhouettes inspired by the marine world.
After suede, July returns to boho chic with the much-anticipated comeback of lace. No longer used as a punk detail from indie sleaze but featured in billowy shirts and skirts, the trend draws partly from the coquette world of 2023 and 2024 and partly from true ’70s vintage. «The focus will be on letting the fabric take center stage in an outfit, and this is where lace comes into play,» the report reads. Maxi and mini lace dresses are expected to grow by 4% and 7% in 2025, while skirts will grow by 9%. August shifts attention back to sports of yesteryear with polo shirts, tied to the resurgence of sports like rugby, baseball, sailing, tennis, and golf. Over the next twelve months, sporty shirts with collars are predicted to see a 10% rise in popularity.
According to Heuritech's predictions, the final months of 2025 will embrace timeless classics. September will see further growth in thin-soled sneakers, which combine preppy and urban aesthetics to cater to both styles while prioritizing clean, refined lines over exaggeration. For men, thin sneakers are expected to gain a 5% increase in popularity, while for women, it will be 3%, and throughout the year, 12%. The most intriguing observation noted by the forecasting company is that this shoe will appeal to all generations, from Gen Z to Gen X. For autumn's arrival in October, Heuritech's report shifts attention to a color palette already making waves, as announced by Pantone as the star of 2025. Brown in all its shades will be a hit among consumers as colder weather arrives, with a 55% growth during the final quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year and a 26% increase throughout all twelve months. The company highlights shades like tawny, cinnamon, and chocolate as the most popular—while Pantone calls it “Mocha Mousse.”
In November, sports are back in focus with riding boots, which are set to see a total popularity increase of 63% during the final stretch of 2025. «Riding boots have long been associated with the English upper class, a symbol of sophistication, tradition, and affinity with equestrian culture,» writes Heuritech. Following the rise of aesthetics like English Frazzled Girl, riding boots represent «the fusion between outdoor-inspired clothing and a distinctly British sense of refinement and nostalgia.» 2025 ends with the return of fur, which throughout the year is expected to grow even more than in 2024, achieving a 25% increase in popularity. Snow boots will also participate in the trend, attracting even more attention than the previous winter, with a total growth of 7%. In summary: this year, vintage will continue to hold us firmly in its grasp, taking us to the free-love era of the '70s and the rom-coms of the early 2000s. Meanwhile, we'll take breaks at the seaside or on a golf or rugby field in the company of boat shoes and polo shirts.
