PUMA's new fashion show dedicated to the Mostro sneaker
New York Fashion Week's Most Unexpected Date.
February 12th, 2024
Last Thursday's "Welcome To The Amazing Mostro Show" by PUMA was a rather unexpected moment of the ongoing New York Fashion Week, held against the backdrop of the iconic Park Avenue Armory. The event, which celebrated the revival of the Mostro sneakers, surpassed typical fashion presentations with its fusion of light, projection, experiential elements, and a musical performance by Eartheater. The Mostro sneaker, named after the Italian word for "monster," made its triumphant return, with a series of references from PUMA's rich archives. Originally launched in 1999, the Mostro holds a special place in fashion history. As the audience's taste for Y2K style has resurfaced with full force, PUMA's reintroduction of the Mostro perfectly aligns with this zeitgeist.
Creative Director Heiko Desens succinctly summarized the return of the Mostro, stating to WWD: "After all the overly constructed sneakers, the bulky 'dad shoes,' the outdoor trend, it was clear that the low-profile would come back massively." With styling by Alastair McKimm alongside Heiko Desens, the runway showcased 56 looks, mixing both conceptual and more commercial pieces from PUMA's FW24 collections. The apparel, serving as a canvas to showcase the Mostro, embraced extremes with oversized or shrunken silhouettes, emphasizing the shoe's versatility. From reimagined classic T7 tracksuits to everyday garments with exaggerated proportions, the collection exuded a contemporary yet maximalist aesthetic, firmly rooted in sport but transcending traditional athletic wear. The event showcased several exclusive iterations of the Mostro show, including innovative 3D-printed designs and a knee-high knitted version with a sock-like construction. PUMA's experimentation with 3D engineering highlighted the brand's commitment to pushing boundaries and redefining footwear innovation.
Desens also emphasized the importance of catering to consumers' diverse tastes, demonstrating how the Mostro integrates seamlessly into various style aesthetics and how its reintroduction has aligned with consumers' changing preferences for long years, offering an altrernative from the uniform fashion trends of the past decade. Looking ahead to the months to come, PUMA team members hinted at exciting collaborations and new launches, including the "Ecstasy Package" and upcoming camouflage and mono mesh iterations. The brand's strategic approach with its limited releases aims to make the sneaker a collector's item that will be equipped with all the technical enhancements that modern sneaker design has to offer when it is relaunched. A cultural relevance further solidified by the recent campaign directed and interpreted by PUMA x F1 Creative Director A$AP Rocky.
