The Alexander McQueen biopic is happening
Oliver Hermanus is the second director taking on the project
November 21st, 2023
The first time the fashion industry heard about a possible biopic on Alexander McQueen was back in 2016, when Andrew Haigh, the producer of The Iron Lady (2011), announced that he would direct a film based on the biography by Andrew Wilson, Blood Beneath the Skin. This week, seven years after the initial announcement, five years after the release of the documentary McQueen, and thirteen years after the death of the English designer, new reports point to director Oliver Hermanus as the man who will bring the project to life. Currently, Hermanus is working on another film, a gay romance starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, so it is still early to discover who will be part of the cast.
According to reports from ScreenDaily, the project will be overseen by Pathe UK, as announced in 2016, with production remaining in the hands of Damian Jones. Hermanus, who will direct the McQueen biopic, has previously directed the films Living (2022) and Beauty (2011), the latter winning the Queer Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival. All we know about Pathe and Hermanus' new project is that it is heading towards production. The director is currently still involved in the filming of The History of Sound, the adaptation of a gay novel starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. While it was once rumored that Jack O’Connell, the British actor known for playing James Cook in the English series Skins, would portray McQueen, everything about the new production is yet to be announced, again.
