What went down at the 75th anniversary of the Omega Seamaster in Mykonos
A special event filled with international guests to celebrate a Swiss watchmaking legend
June 29th, 2023
Mykonos, one of the most iconic and legendary Greek islands nestled in the Aegean Sea, was the location chosen by OMEGA to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the iconic Seamaster line and the launch of the Seamaster in Summer Blue collection. The event featured many celebrity guests from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and exploration, including George Clooney, Naomie Harris, Paul Wesley and Jesse Williams, record-breaking explorer Victor Vescovo, and Olympic champions Blair Tuke and Peter Burling. The choice of the location was dictated not only by the opening of OMEGA's new pop-up in the center of Mykonos Town, decorated for the occasion by an imposing marble statue, but also by the link that the brand possesses with the culture of Greece: this link is already present in its name, which is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, but also the iconography of the Seamaster line refers to the myth of the Greek god Poseidon, whose effigy is represented in the watch cases and accessories that accompany the collection, referencing the logo created by designer Jean-Pierre Borle in 1956.
The Seamaster celebration focused on the theme "Precision at Every Level" and included in-depth lectures on ocean exploration and conservation, as well as the launch of the new Seamaster in Summer Blue collection. This collection, presented in the exclusive setting of Bagatelle in Mykonos, includes seven iconic models, for a total of eleven watches, which are distinguished by a single tone of blue ranging from the brightest to the darkest hues to represent the water resistance of each model and its ability to brave the ocean depths. The watches range from the Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M, perfect for life aboard a yacht, to the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep 6,000M, designed for the darkest depths of the sea to the Aqua Terra Worldtimer, on whose dial laser ablation of texture and then color on a grade 5 titanium plate produced a miniature reproduction of the planisphere with continents in relief and surrounded, just as in Greek mythology, by a blue ocean. The collection is a tribute to the Seamaster's long history of innovation, exploration, design and ocean performance.
OMEGA's scientific and environmental commitment to the marine world
A guest particularly familiar to the world of OMEGA and present at the event was Victor Vescovo, one of the world's most daring explorers who in 2019 set a new world record by successfully piloting his submarine Limiting Factor to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, reaching a depth of 10,928 meters. This feat demonstrated the validity of OMEGA's Ultra Deep watch concepts and highlighted the connection between the brand and extreme adventures. Also present at the event in Mykonos were Blair Tuke and Peter Burling, members of Emirates Team New Zealand and America's Cup defenders and winners of several Olympic medals. These two sailors, in addition to their dedication to sailing, are also the founders of Live Ocean, a charity in New Zealand that supports and invests in promising science, innovation, technology and ocean conservation projects. Their participation in the event underscored OMEGA's commitment to supporting the protection of marine environments. Raynald Aeschlimann, president and CEO of OMEGA, expressed great pride in the history and legacy of the Seamaster, which, in addition to being a symbol of elegance, is able to withstand extreme environments, thus representing a true legend of Swiss watchmaking, calling it a «legend». The anniversary of the Seamaster was celebrated with a candlelight dinner in one of Mykonos' most beautiful coves, a perfect occasion to end the event in a picturesque way.
The story of the OMEGA Seamaster
The history of the Seamaster began a full 16 years before its official birth in 1932 with the launch of the OMEGA "Marine," the world's first diver's watch for civilian use. This groundbreaking timepiece, successfully tested to a depth of 73 meters in the waters of Lake Geneva, proved water-resistant to 135 meters during pressure tests conducted at the Watch Research Laboratory in Neuchâtel. This significant debut paved the way for OMEGA's rapid advances in the field of diving watches. During World War II, OMEGA supplied more than 110,000 watches for pilots, en route officers and soldiers to the British Ministry of Defense, thus demonstrating its expertise in water resistance, anti-magnetism and resistance. This experience has enabled the brand to create a series of watches capable of tackling the most extreme conditions. The Seamaster collection was launched in 1948 to mark OMEGA's centenary, combining battlefield-proven technology with elegant aesthetics to create a timepiece suitable for city, sea and country. Over the years, the Seamaster has become the model of choice for underwater adventure enthusiasts, while also contributing to the exploration and preservation of the oceans through its historic association with dedicated personalities in these fields.
Today, OMEGA is able to test every waterproof watch in a real-world underwater environment thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities and certification standards established by METAS (Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology). The timepieces presented to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Seamaster line are a tribute to OMEGA's extraordinary history of innovation, exploration, design and oceanic performance.
