Erykah Badu collaborates with Marni on a capsule celebrating spirituality
Patchwork and sequin coats, boots and hats offer a mystical experience in the world of Badu
May 4th, 2023
American singer-songwriter Erykah Badu is known the world over as an artist committed to social issues and strongly linked to spirituality, aspects that have been genuinely reflected in her style since the 1990s. This is why Francesco Risso, the creative director of Marni, decided to collaborate with Badu for the new capsule collection of the multidisciplinary Marni Jam project, a line of one-of-a-kind garments designed for FW23. The collection includes ready-to-wear, shoes, and women's accessories, and aims to celebrate Risso and Badu's artistic vision by focusing on the quality of fabrics and workmanship, found in the leather patchwork, velvet and sequins.
The campaign presenting the capsule has also been directed by Erykah Badu, accompanied by the lens of Sergio Cattivelli and the evocative and cosy setting of a church in Dallas, Texas. In these images, the collection breathes a deep spiritual and creative atmosphere, in keeping with the singer-songwriter's art, mixing the garments' bright colours with the sense of solemnity of wood and the soft hues of the landscape. Each element designed by Risso and Badu is intended to evoke a multi-sensory experience, from mosaic-stitched trench coats to shearling compound coats, from knitted capes to satin and velvet long dresses. Through a colour block palette, everything reflects an aura of comfort and liveliness, and even some of the sequin-covered coats echo one of the neo-soul artist's signature style codes, tinkling with every movement. Presented during the Met Gala at Marni's New York boutique, the capsule collection was celebrated during an exclusive event, and will be available in selected US shops from 3 May, and in some European stores during the winter season.
