How to be stylish when you're skiing
The challenge of being glamorous below zero
December 9th, 2022
When the temperature is above freezing, it can be difficult enough to put together a decent outfit, but what do we do when the snow is raging, the streets are freezing and the duvet seems to be the only piece of clothing we want to wear at all? Despite the harsh weather and impassable roads, celebrities have made skiing a staple of the glamorous lifestyle, from Brigitte Bardot's flawless, altitude-proof make-up to Cher's glitzy '80s outfits to Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton's loud Y2K outfits: stylish in the snow? You can, but with a few little tricks.
From the 1930s to the present day, snowwear has changed dramatically thanks to the development of increasingly efficient thermal and waterproof fabrics - from nylon to GORE-TEX - and the progressive integration of these garments into our daily wardrobe. Arc'teryx, Patagonia, Columbia, The North Face and many others: If there's one thing streetwear has left us with, it's a fascination with garments that are functional but do not transcend styling issues. There are two options: Embrace winter wear in all its flamboyance with prints and shades, as exemplified by the icons of the 80s - Brooke Shields, Lady D, Cher or, more recently, the bright yellow suits of Dua Lipa and David Beckham or the Dior monogram worn by Kendall Jenner in Aspen a few winters ago - or rely on the calming charm of monochrome. After all, it's a well-known fact that a ski wardrobe with its layers does not exactly ennoble the figure, and that's why many celebrities opt for black: that's the case with Kim Kardashian, who has always favoured total black from Prada Linea Rossa or in a full-body Moncler look for her family holidays, and the same goes for Kate Moss, at least that was the case before the accident in the Swiss Alps in 2016 that cost her a broken leg
From mirrored sunglasses to fur gloves, accessories are key when it comes to looking chic and staying warm. Cher wearing a slim fuchsia headband in Aspen in 1977 and Princess Diana wearing a red and white braided headband in Klosters in 1986 steal the show when it comes to vintage headwear inspiration. Both on and off the slopes, Brigitte Bardot is the benchmark for oversized oval sunglasses, while Sophia Loren pairs classic aviator glasses and a Christmas jumper with a striking red scarf in a 1978 shot on the slopes. In the 2000s, ski fashion became sexy as icons like Paris Hilton and Victoria Beckham wore low-slung snow trousers, oversized mirrored goggles and fur-trimmed jackets, paving the way for the next generation of trendsetters and influencers. Between moon boots and total looks from Fendi or Chanel, holidaying in the snow is an exercise in style for Kylie Jenner, but despite the commitment, most of the viral moments belong to her sister Kendall, from when she posed surrounded by snow in a bikini and yeti boots to the dark green Loewe bomber jacket that has become the most coveted part of a winter wardrobe. So whichever way you go for your snow outfit, the prospects of an Instagramming moment in the Alps are definitely there.
