This year, the entire Netflix platform has been kept afloat by Ryan Murphy's series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story - the show has become wildly popular, once again exploding interest in the famous serial killer. The collective fascination with the Milwaukee Cannibal has sparked some controversy, given the fact that his crimes are not fiction but something tragically real. Specifically, in the United States, some people have chosen to dress up as the serial killer for Halloween - a choice that numerous users on social media have considered distasteful. Among the companies reacting to this type of fascination is eBay, which has banned the sale and removed from its platform all Halloween accessories and costumes associated with Jeffrey Dahmer.
Jeffrey Dahmer was a REAL life serial kiIIIer. His victims families are STILL alive today. It’s 1000s of fictional non-offensive characters to be for Halloween. Don’t let Netflix get you & your kids ass whooped pic.twitter.com/oSsfXZf6yn

The removal is motivated by eBay's Violence and Violent Criminal Policy which states «listings that promote or glorify violence or violent acts, or are associated with individuals who are notorious for committing violent acts, are not allowed». At the moment, eBay is the first major e-commerce platform to ban the sale of accessories related to the serial killer that appear to date to be for sale on Amazon and Etsy to give an example, in the form of blond wig sets, glasses and plastic knives or in the form of prison jumpsuits with a name tag.
