Yeezy and Balenciaga together for a collabo with Gap
Demna and Ye prepare the collabo of the year
January 7th, 2022
It will be called Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga and will unite the creative minds of Kanye West and Demna in a single collaboration to create a collection designed to bring "incredible products available to anyone at any time," as West told Vogue. The announcement, although it came out of the blue, had been in the air for some time, ever since the relationship between West and Balenciaga's creative director had grown increasingly thick, leading us to assume some kind of collaboration between the two parties.
"It's a very different challenge," Demna commented comparing it to the project with Gucci. "I have always appreciated the utilitarianism and accessibility of Gap. I share the same sensibility in my creative language. This project will give me a way to join forces with Ye to create fashion designed for everyone." The idea of "democratic fashion" was already at the base of the first collabo between Yeezy and Gap, the one that in recent months had given birth first to the perfect hoodie and then to the Round Jacket. The entry of Balenciaga, but especially of a creative mind with Demna, makes this concept even more extreme, putting the vision of one of the leading names in the fashion system at the service of a "popular" brand like Gap.
It will remain to be seen how, but on paper Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga is shaping up to be a new watershed moment not only for the concept of collaboration, but also for fashion itself and its closed-box system. The first part of the collabo will arrive in June, with the second part coming during the rest of the year.
