Is there a problem with Kanye West and GAP's Perfect Hoodies?
After the hype of the release, the first comments are beginning to cast doubt on the collabo
October 8th, 2021
After the drop a few weeks ago, the Perfect Hoodie from the Yeezy/Gap collab has started to arrive to the first American buyers, generating a long series of contrasting opinions and reviews. One of the most debated issues is the actual quality of the product, which according to some is too thin and different from what is shown in the promotional material, from the images seen on the GAP website to some behind-the-scenes photos that appeared online. According to another segment of users, however, the hoodie seems to have met expectations in terms of quality and fitting, falling perfectly within the $90 retail price range.
Immediately after the drop, several users complained about the price, which they said was too high for a hoodie without any logo and sold by a fast-fashion chain like GAP. Although in this case the truth seems to be in the middle, between those who cry scandal and those who are satisfied, it is worth remembering that the retail price of the hoodie is lower than that of many other competitors: an adidas Humanrace hoodie costs 170€, while a Pangaia can go from 137€ to 160€. The reason for the scandal in this case seems to be that many users expected a hoodie of the same quality as the 2020 Vision released during West's presidential bid or a Yeezy Season hoodie, both of which have retail prices well above those produced by Yeezy and Gap.
When the collabbo was announced, one of the terms used to describe it was "democratic fashion", the idea of giving everyone the chance to buy a garment capable of creating a "middle ground" between fitting, quality and hype. At the moment, however, the verdict still seems to be in the balance, suspended by the judgments of a fanbase that is in some cases too permissive and those who are waiting for any opportunity to pull Kanye West's ears.
