The new Converse x DRKSHDW TURBOWPN by Rick Owens
The return in style of Converse's Weapon silhouette
August 18th, 2021
Rick Owens and Converse today unveiled their second collaborative model, the Converse x DRKSHDW TURBOWPN. The new silhouette is a reworking on the design of the famous Converse Weapon – a model whose comeback was announced by Converse in January with the presentation of the CX Collection. The Weapon was one of the most iconic sneakers of the 80s, similar to the Nike Dunk that inspired Owens for the creation of the legendary Geobasket – a heritage underlined by the black colorway that evokes that of the original model released in 1986. Owens, however, has redesigned its silhouette wanting to pay homage to «systems of living that might not be standard».
In reinterpreting the silhouette, Owens has added all his personal touches that are now part of the imagery of the DRKSHDW line: the elongated tabs, the platform sole and the inverted pentacle that replaces the Converse star. In the process of re-design of the original Converse Weapon, the designer wanted to emphasize the importance of proportions and their exaggeration: «When I discovered how powerful just oversizing something a little bit was, which I've done with a lot of my clothes, that became one of my tools».
