The Met Gala to take place in September
The most anticipated event of the fashion industry won't be held in May as usual
April 13th, 2021
After cancelling its event in 2020 due to the pandemic, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the Met Gala will return in presence with two new dates: September 13, 2029 and May 2022. The September event will, according to Billboard, be more "intimate" and will jumpstart a two-part exhibition called In America: A Lexicon of Fashion that will start on September 18 and last until September 5, 2022 exploring the «a modern vocabulary of American fashion». The museum's director, Max Hollein, explained:
«This two-part exhibition will consider how fashion reflects evolving notions of identity in America and will explore a multitude of perspectives through presentations that speak to some of the complexities of history with powerful immediacy».
The gallery will host a «fictional American home» constructed with transparent walls that intersect and overlap. Examples of recent and past fashion will be the protagonists of the exhibition with the most famous designs of sportswear pioneers combined to the works of a diverse group of contemporary designers telling, through costume, the history of fashion made in usa. A film project will also be part of the exhibition, led by director Melina Matsoukas who will create a film from the open ending whose contents will change throughout the duration of the project.
