The new vegan Jelly Shoes by Melissa x Rombaut
Summer 2021 will be all about sustainability
April 9th, 2021
Melissa is a Brazilian brand founded in 1979 and specialized in products created with sustainable manufactured recyclable plastic. The brand has the merit of inventing the famous Jelly Shoe in the 1990s and, over the years, has collaborated with illustrious fashion names such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garçons, Marine Serre, and, more recently, Y / PROJECT in the FW21 show. The most recent collaboration, however, is with the hardcore-vegan brand Rombaut, famous for its sustainable footwear with a bold and aggressive design. Together, the two brands have co-signed a collection of sustainable sneakers and sandals for the upcoming summer season. Mets Rombaut, the founder of the eponymous brand, said:
Rombaut tries to do things better and seeks new solutions for the future. With the global climate crisis I wanted to draw attention to this theme by speaking through our flagship sneaker, boccaccio, with a melting effect. My favorite thing about Melissa's production is that you can return the shoes used directly to their stores and recycle them to produce the new shoes!
The collaboration consists of Melissa's iconic Possession sandal and a melting version of Rombaut's Boccaccio sneaker in cream colourways, black, marbled green, transparent brown with agglomerate produced with rice and purple chaub. The material used was made from 50% recycled PVC from factory waste and with 30% bio-based renewable carbon composed of sugar cane and vegetable oil. Shoelaces are made from 100% recycled PET bottles.
