The Design Museum in London organized an exhibition with StockX on sneaker culture called Sneakers Unboxed: From Studio To Street. More than 200 pairs of historic sneakers, both vintage and modern, will be exhibited, with behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of the most iconic models. The show will include, among the most particular items on display, also the robot of adidas Futurecraft.Strung, a machine capable of assembling sneakers on-the-spot. The exhibition will open its doors on May 18th and will remain open until October 24th.
The exhibition will also explore the history of sneakers in relation to subcultures around the world, including West Coast skaters, the British grime scene, and South Africa's bubbleheads. Ligaya Salazar, curator of the exhibition, explained in a statement:
«Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street reveals the role young people from diverse backgrounds have played in making individual sneakers into style icons and in driving an industry now worth billions. The exhibition also gives behind- the-scenes insight into new upcycling and sustainable design practices, unseen prototypes predicting the future of performance design, and streetwear and fashion collaborations that changed the face of the industry».
Among the historical sneakers on display, the rarest prototypes and the latest technologies in the field of sustainability, the exhibition will also contain modern collaborations and icons, such as Samuel Ross's projects with Converse and Nike, the Yeezy and Air Dior, and artwork inspired by the sneaker world, such as those of artists such as Jack Harper, Jamel Shabazz, Grace Ladoja , Simon Wheatley and Reuben Dangoor as well as a series of insights on circular economy and upcyling and a meeting with designers specialized in sustainability including Stella McCartney.
