Black Canvas is the name of Calvin Klein's new SS21 campaign shot by Mario Sorrenti. Its ultra-minimalistic concept is a direct reflection of the minimalism of the collection – an aesthetic simplicity that aims to become expressive simplicity, a blank canvas for each of the protagonists. And the protagonists were chosen from athletes, activists, singers and dancers who excel in their respective fields: Megan Thee Stallion, Euphoria actor Jacob Elordi, Anthony Ramos of Hamilton fame, activist Janaya Future Khan, reggae artist Koffee, singer Rina Sawayama, skater Sage Elsesser, dancer Vinson Fraley and Los Angeles collective Queer Skate LA.
The nine protagonists represent a new generation of creators and storytellers who are making their way into the world and rewriting the narratives of the future. This tension towards a change of gear is also reflected in the workmanship of the garments, created from sustainable materials and produced with low impact techniques. Mario Sorrenti, together with director Terence Nance, told the stories of each one in the candid, open and bold style that has always distinguished the iconic campaigns of the brand.
