JW Anderson's nordic sailors in the new Moncler Genius collection
The latest chapter in the collaborative project inspired by Northern Ireland's fishermen and sunsets
March 1st, 2021
JW Anderson's is certainly one of the most important voices in today's fashion world. Whether it's Loewe, the brand that bears his name or, as in this case, the new 1 Moncler JW Anderson collection, the new chapter of the Moncler Genius Project, the British designer never misses a beat. Just for this last chapter, created for the SS21 season, Anderson has rethought the classic Moncler repertoire in the light of an aesthetic inspired by nomadic travelers and the seafaring world: the fishermen of his native Northern Ireland, the sailors and their wives waiting for them on shore are all evoked through a technical wardrobe that looks at the performance but softened by Anderson's human touch and imagination , which injects all its colors and technicality into this imagery.
As in JW Anderson's other collections, the garments are completely genderless. Parka, field jacket, bermuda shorts and cargo pants are decorated with eyelets and triple seams typical of sailors' clothing, but these sartorial details also extend to jersey T-shirts and sweatshirts that feature hoodies, pockets, and closures in vibrant color-blocking. Some of these garments, such as the color-block jacket, the degradè vest or the trousers and bermuda shorts are also available in a sustainable version, with external fabrics are made of ECONYL®, regenerated nylon made from plastic recycled materials. The work on colors and colors, which want to reproduce the soft palettes of the Northern Irish beaches decorate anorak and women's jersey dresses adding a psychedelic and dreamy touch to clothing. Another detail of the collection is the quilting inspired by vintage blankets that decorate jackets, coats and items from the women's collection. Finally, to sum up the spirit of a collection that wants to reconcile its contrasts, Anderson has signed a Chelsea Boot with tank sole in a series of bright colors – the same aesthetic applied to cordura bags and totes.
In conjunction with the release of the collection, Moncler and JW Anderson also presented a multidisciplinary cultural program, launching the first series of Moncler Genius podcasts in collaboration with the MUBI platform, which will create a visual/auditory path to tell the creativity and inspirations of Jonathan Anderson. The Moncler Genius podcast series comes to life on Spotify where the main protagonists of the fashion world are confronted on current topics. Presented by Serpentine Galleries Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist, the inaugural episode describes Jonathan Anderson's personal journey that will explain the work behind the second collection for Moncler Genius. The selection of films on MUBI, on the other hand, ranges from author's short films to films about travel. In addition, a limited edition zine has been created that contains a conversation between the designer and Hans Ulrich Obrist, interspersed with a selection of images taken specifically for the launch of the collection.
