The past and the future of Africa in Daily Paper's latest collection
A proposal for the SS21 season entitled 'Future Roots'
January 22nd, 2021
No brand has been able to tell African history and traditions better than Daily Paper, managing at the same time to offer a contemporary and fresh vision, the result of global and multifaceted inspiration. After having collaborated on Ghana's first skate park together with Virgil Abloh and Off-White™, the brand now presents its SS21 collection entitled Future Roots.
The focus this season is twofold: on the one hand, the brand explores the wisdom and traditions of pre-colonial civilizations; on the other, it drew inspiration from the creativity and innovation of the post-colonial movements. The union of these two antithetical elements is mainly translated in the choice of fabrics, the result of extensive research through traditional African fabrics, reinterpreted through satin inserts, tailored pieces, draperies and voluminous shirts. Most of all, what is striking is the intricate lace detail, the empty portrait of a face, that aims at symbolizing all the heroes of the past. The colour palette of the season includes pastel shades such as turquoise, lilac, beige and brown, light green and different shades of white.
The collection also sees the introduction of a new monogram print that reproduces Daily Paper's symbol, a shield, used on a brown satin and jacquard suit. Finally, blazers, wide trousers and pleated skirts recall the school uniforms typical of the 60s and 70s, a very important historical period for the birth of social movements. The whole proposal pays homage to the roots and the past to which Daily Paper is anchored, a starting point for the future.
