March 1st, 2021
UPDATE 01.03.21: After the rumors of a few weeks ago, Birkenstock has found a new owner. L Catterton, a group to which LVMH and Catterton are part, acquired the brand for around € 4 billion, while Christian and Alex Birkenstock will still retain a minority stake.
02.08.21: CVC Capital is no longer the only one interested in buying Birkenstock. L Catterton, a group to which LVMH and Catterton are members, would have entered the deal with the intention of outperforming the competition. According to some sources close to the group, the intention is to close the deal by March.
01.19.21: Birkenstock might be for sale. The news comes directly from Bloomberg, sure about the intentions of the German brand, which might be already in talks with CVC Capital to finalize the sale. Birkenstock's intention would be to sell the entire company, including debts, for a total of about 5 billion dollars.
The sale to CVC Capital would once again mark a victory for the trend of mini-conglomerates in the fashion world, adding a respectable name to the package of the British financial company that can already count on names like Breitling and Douglas. At the moment the two sides are still in talks and neither of them wanted to comment on the news.
Having landed in America in 1966 thanks to Margot Fraser, Birkenstock experienced its maximum popularity between the 90s and early 2000s, starting to appear in the outfits of celebrities such as Kate Moss and Heidi Klum. In recent years the brand has collected a long series of collaborations, from Valentino to Proenza Schouler, finding its place in the world of fashion. Among the collaborations that have never seen the light is the one with Supreme, proposed by the skate brand but rejected by Birkenstock defining it as "prostitution". Despite this, the German brand has also managed to find its place in streetwear, from the collaboration with Stussy to the choice of Kanye West to wear a pair of Boston on several occasions.
