Gucci has announced a collaboration with The North Face
The gorpcore aesthetic at the climb of high fashion
September 24th, 2020
Without giving further details, via a simple reel on their Instagram page, Gucci announced yesterday afternoon that it was going to collaborate with The North Face. A news that, potentially, means a lot of things: this could in fact be the first complete collaborative collection of Gucci by Alessandro Michele and also represents a definitive consecration of the gorpcore aesthetic within the luxury fashion world that, thanks to the enormous importance of both brands, could rival in this sense with Moncler Genius, the foray of gorpocore in the most successful and best structured fashion of recent years.
A commentary made by Gucci to WWD, reports that the collaboration will celebrate "the rich heritage of both brands" - heritage that, in the case of The North Face, has expanded more and more into the realm of luxury fashion with collaborations involving Supreme, Junya Watanabe and Sacai as well as MM6 Maison Margiela last February. But compared to these other collaborations, the one with Gucci sounds like the most surprising – it's as exciting as it is hard to imagine how Alessandro Michele's vintage world can shape the utilitarian aesthetic of a brand like The North Face.
The result will undoubtedly be one of the most important luxury collaborations of recent years, considering that both brands (as well as sharing a certain philosophy of pro-naturalism) are immensely popular in their respective sectors, leading to a combined media power that has the potential to make the collection a total cult.
