India inspires Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel Collection

Against a white background at Paris’ Grand Palais, models strutted past tables piled high with fruit, macaroons, candelabras and other fancy adornments. Heavy silks and traditional South Asian teekas were seen on the chosen women of the Chanel visionary Karl Lagerfield show, entitled “Paris-Bombay Métiers d’Art Show” on Tuesday. Honoring Chanel’s craftsmen, Lagerfeld took inspiration from the people of India, telling the Wall Street Journal after the show that “even the poor have dignity…even poor women own three gold bracelets.” Though the collection is far from being  ready-to-wear, the regal elegance apparent in even the lowest classes in India is incorporated into the collection. The use of Mumbai’s old moniker, Bombay, in the show’s name seemed not only deliberate but extremely fitting. The Indian influence was kept solely traditional, ranging from churidar-style leggings to the forehead-bedazzling teekas mentioned above. The shapes take us back to a stately time, while the jewels complete the look, leaving us in complete awe.

Sete pesanti e tradizionali teekas dell' Asia meridionale sono stati avvistati sulla passerella Haute Couture di Chanel opera dell'estro visionario di Karl Lagerfield, intitolata "Paris-Bombay Métiers d'Art Show". Onorando l'abilità degli artigiani nel plasmare la pelle in una creazione di lusso, Lagerfield ha tratto ispirazione dalle comunità indiane, come ha raccontato al Wall Street Journal nel dopo sfilata: "anche i poveri hanno dignità… In India persino le donne povere possiedono tre braccialetti d'oro". Nonostante la collezione sia ben lontana dal diventare ready-to-wear, l'eleganza regale che appartiene anche alle classi sociali meno abbienti dell'India è parte integrante di essa. L'influenza della tradizione indiana è solida, passando dallo stile-churidar dei leggings agli abbaglianti teekas, citati sopra. Le forme ci riportano ad un tempo maestoso, mentre i gioielli completano il look, lasciandoci in completa soggezione.
