Vestiaire Collective has compiled the predictions on the secondhand market this year
January 30th, 2020
Just as the fashion of boutiques and catwalks changes and evolves according to trends, that of resell and large secondhand luxury platforms also has currents and directions. The secondary luxury market has become thriving as early as 2019, with the boom of online marketplaces and a growing sophistication of customer services. The more customers increase, the more data about their preferences and behaviors. Just by analyzing this data, Vestiaire Collective has reported on the major trends of the past year and the forecasts of those of the year that is starting. Starting with this report, we have drawn up a list of the top five trends that will involve the resell market in 2020.
BRANDS TO KEEP AN EYE ON
Of the four emerging brands reported by Vestiaire Collective, Rhude is certainly the most famous of all. The American brand founded by Rhuigi Villaseñor has been seen on top of hip-hop heavyweights such as Kendrick Lamar and Snopp Dogg, walked the runway in Paris last month and signed collaborations with brands such as Vans and Puma. La Veste, founded in France by Spain's Blanca Miro and Maria de la Orden, will also make its name this year along with A.W.A.K.E. MODE, created in 2012 by Harper's Bazaar Russia fashion director Natalia Alaverdian. Another brand reported in the report is Stand Studio, born in 2014 at the hands of Nellie Kamras.
SNEAKERS
Just as the '90s were the primary source of fashion references in 2019, in 2020 the focus will shift to the first decade of the 2000s. There are two Nike models that will become popular this year. The first is the Nike Dunk, a silhouette that appeared in the mid-1980s and was updated in 2002 with the Nike SB line. The second model will be the Air Max 360, first unveiled in 2006 and equipped with the Max Air system under the entire sole. Another sneaker brand that is also expected to increase in popularity is New Balance.
WATCHES
Rolex will increase its value by 6.5% over the course of this year on the primary market, and this will result in a sure increase in prices even on the secondary market. In addition, for the latter part of 2019, the search for large watches has gradually waned and the report suggests that small watches will be the main trend of 2020.
HANDBAGS
The most popular bag model in 2020 will be the multi-clutch. These composite and customizable bags have already been successfully launched by Louis Vuitton and Prada. In particular, Prada's Hobo model is already in the top 5 best-selling bags and is likely to increase its value in the months ahead.
BRANDS TO INVEST IN
There are three brands whose items represent a safe investment: the first is Bottega Veneta, which has seen its popularity and value increase since the arrival of the current creative director Daniel Lee; follows Prada, which recorded a 39% increase in sales on Vestiaire Collective; the third is Jacquemus which is now in its tenth year and led by its founder Simon Porte Jacquemus has seen its popularity grow from season to season.
