interview with Anna-Catherine Hartley

Sono lieta di introdurvi un’esordiente icona di stile; una lady dalla carica esplosiva, dalla forte personalità ed una fenomenale voce dai toni electropop. Con l’uscita del suo primo album, ha spopolato in tutto il mondo; amante della street fashion e figlia della Ed Banger Records, una delle etichette più importanti all’interno del panorama electro-indie, ha iniziato giovanissima ed ha già collaborato con artisti e nomi considerevoli come il dj e producer Sebastian, Justice e Crystal Castles! Giovane, sexy ed inarrestabile, con me per Naplestreetstyle, UFFIE!

L: Ciao Uffie.. come stai?
U: Abbastanza bene, sono solo un po’ stanca perché rientro da un concerto a Lisbona che ho dato la scorsa notte!

L: Penso che avrai risposto a questa cosa centinaia di volte, ma sono curiosa quindi mi piacerebbe sapere come mai hai deciso di chiamarti “UFFIE”?
U: “UFFIE” è semplicemente un soprannome.. In realtà nasconde un legame affettivo.. Me lo affibbiò mio padre quando ero ancora una bambina... Ho deciso di tenerlo come nome d’arte perché ci sono solo molto affezionata.

L: So che hai avuto un’adolescenza particolare.. sicuramente movimentata.. Me ne potresti parlare? Come hai vissuto quei momenti?
U: Bè.. Quando ero più piccola mi sono trasferita in giro per il mondo un sacco di volte, mi sono spostata ovunque; Asia, isole, grandi città e piccoli paesi americani, potrei dire che ho trascorso un’adolescenza un po’ come una zingara... In realtà mi sto rendendo conto solo adesso che non è esattamente un’esistenza normale per una bambina, ma sinceramente amavo molto quel modo di vivere...

L: Se non sbaglio, dovresti avere una figlia molto piccola.. Anche lei segue le orme della madre, così giovane, ha già attraversato il mondo!
U: Ahahah.. In effetti hai ragione.. Mi segue ovunque!

L: Ecco.. a tale proposito, mi chiedevo; come fai a gestire i tuoi impegni lavorativi ed al tempo stesso quelli della tua vita privata?!
U: Penso che affrontare la vita con un bambino sia molto difficile e sicuramente la convivenza è frenetica, specialmente quando sei giovane e sia la vita notturna sia i viaggi sono due pilastri fondamentali sui quali si basa il tuo lavoro.. Eppure cerco di combinare entrambe le cose.. La differenza tra il mio modo di vivere e quello di una famiglia normale sta nel fatto che mentre la maggior parte dei genitori deve lavorare tutti i giorni, io mi concedo, quando posso, due settimane di completo riposo per trascorrere tutto il mio tempo assieme a lei... è semplicemente una diversa organizzazione di tempo rispetto alla maggior parte dei casi.

L: Cambiando discorso.. Come ti sei sentita quando sei salita sul palco per la prima volta?
U: Accidenti! Completamente terrorizzata!!!

L: Potresti dirmi come e quando hai iniziato a fare musica?
U: Si certo, avevo appena compiuto 18 anni quando incontrai DJ Feadz ed assieme a lui lavorammo su quello che poi fu il mio primo singolo; “Pop The Glock”, pubblicato da “Ed Banger Records” l’etichetta che in seguito mi ha affiancato il produttore Sébastien e Mr. Oizo.

L: Qual è il tuo background musicale? I gruppi o dischi che ti hanno influenzato?
U: Dunque.. Fammi pensare… Biggie, The Specials, The Slits, Souxsie And The Banshees, Pharrell, Jay-Z, Joy Division, Eric Clapton.. Wow!.. E’ un gran bel mix!

L: Dimmi.. Come ti sei sentita a lavorare a fianco di Pharrell Williams?
U: La collaborazione con Pharrel Williams è stata davvero interessante, in più, sono stata una su fan per molto tempo per cui è stato veramente emozionante!

L: Che cosa mi potresti dire riguardo al tuo primo album "Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans”?
U: Sicuramente fu un processo lungo!! Ci volle molto tempo per realizzare le canzoni e farle combaciare coi giusti suoni... Essendo la mia prima esperienza musicale, ho dovuto lavorare duro e c’è stato molto da esplorare.

L: Se ti dovessi chiedere scegliere una tra le canzoni del tuo album, per quale opteresti e perché?
U: Penso “Illusion of Love”. Perché è il primo brano che ho realizzato con Mirwais, e devo dire che liricamente parlando si è trattato di un grande passo per me..

L: Quale credi che sia lo stato d'animo che riesce a renderti più creativa?
U: LA FOLLIA… Posso diventare un po’ pazza e travolta da questo mio stato d’animo ho più energie per compiere gesti irrazionali.. Per cui, quello è certamente un buon momento per creare. Purtroppo penso che tutti i momenti siano giusti anche quando si è depressi.

L: Sei una donna dai molti talenti.. So che ami la moda, che cosa potresti dirmi riguardo a questo argomento?
U: E 'come qualsiasi altra forma d'arte ... E’ un modo per esprimere se stessi. Iniziai a frequentare una scuola per fare la fashion designer, ma fare musica richiede molto tempo e non ne avevo più da dedicare a quel campo, per cui ho dovuto abbandonare, però mi piacerebbe fare di più in voga del futuro ..

L: C'è un designer siete in questo momento?
U: ACNE è splendida proprio come Alexander Wang. Ma se devo scegliere il mio voto va ad un caro amico che personalmente è il mio favorito; Alexandre Vauthier... Quell’uomo è genio!

L: Sei cresciuta ad Hong Kong dopo ti sei trasferita a Miami ed in questo momento vivi a Parigi .. A quale tra queste città ritieni di essere più legata e per quale motivo?
U: Ero a Miami una o due settimane fa’ e credo di essermi innamorata di quella città, seriamente, per la prima volta! Penso che dopo un inverno grigio e rigido in Europa per me sia stato un vero shock rivedere l'oceano ed il tempo raggiante... Ho avuto un colpo! Hong Kong Mi piace da morire.. ma Miami ha davvero catturato la mia attenzione in questo momento!

L: Che progetti hai per il futuro?
U: Sto lavorando su un mixtape in questo momento con alcuni giovani artisti di grande talento e naturalmente al mio secondo album! Poi Tour! Tour! Ed ancora Tour!

L: Dove pensi che sarai tra 10 anni?
U: Non ne ho davvero idea..  A confezionare marmellate in campagna… A scrivere libri.. IN TERAPIA!.. Casalinga, Morta?! Forse nello stesso posto mi trovo adesso... L’UNICA COSA CERTA CHE MI HA INSEGNATO QUESTA ESPERIENZA E’ CHE NON PUOI DAVVERO SAPERE COSA TI RISERVA IL FUTURO! 

L: Molte grazie per il tuo tempo Uffie, sei stata molto gentile e mi hai regalato qualche sorriso! Buona fortuna per il tuo prossimo concerto e dai a tua figlia un bacio da parte mia!
U: Certo! Grazie a te Laura..

ENGLISH VERSION 

L: Hi Uffie .. How are you?!
U:Pretty good, I’m just a little tired ‘cause I’m back from a gig in Lisbon last night!

L: I think you’ve answered this question hundreds of times, but I’m curious so I’d like to know; why did you decide to call you Uffie?
U: "Uffie" is just a nickname .. In fact hidden an emotional bond .. it gave me my father when I was a child... I decided to keep it as a stage name because I have only very fond of it.

L: I know that you had a particular adolescence.. Certainly lively.. Could you speak about that?! How did you live those moments?
U: Well.. When I was younger I moved around the world a lot of times, I moved anywhere, from Asia, islands, to little country and American towns, I could say that I spent a bit adolescence 'as a gypsy ... I'm actually just discovering that it isn't exactly a normal existance for a child, but honestly I loved that way of life ...

L: If I am not mistaken you should have a little daughter.. She follows the footsteps of her mother, so young, had already crossed the world!
U: AhAhAh.. You’re right! Everywhere..

L: About that.. how do you manage your work commitments and those of your private life?
U: I think any life with a child is pretty difficult and hectic, especially when your young and nightlife and travel are important to your work.. I still try to combinate both things.. but when most parents have to work all day, I will get sometimes two weeks off to spend all day with her... its just differnt schedualing I think than most families.

L: Changing the subject.. How did you feel when you're up for the first time on stage?
U: Damn! Terrified!!

L: Could you tell me how and when did you start making music?
U: Yes, of course, I had just turned 18 when I met DJ Feadz and worked with him on what was then my first single, "Pop The Glock, "published by "Ed Banger Records”, the label that has stood by me after the producer Sébastien and Mr. Oizo.

L: What is your musical background? Groups or discs that have influenced you?
U: So.. Let me think.. Biggie, The Specials, the Slits, Souxsie and the Banshees, Pharrell, Jay-Z, Joy Division, Eric Clapton... it’s a big mix!

L: Tell me.. How did you feel working with Pharrell Williams?
U: Collaboration with Pharrel Williams was really interesting and I've been a fan for a while so it was really exciting!

L: What about your first album "Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans”?
U: It was definately a long process!!  It took a long time to get the right songs and sounds... AS my first musical experience I had to work hard and it was a lot of exploring.

L: If you had to choose one of your songs, what would be your favorite and why?
U: I think Illusion of Love. Its the first track I made with Mirwais, and it was a big step lyrically for me.. 

L: Which state of mind makes you more creative?
U: Maddness.... I can get a bit crazy and waves of so much energy I have to do something crazy... so its a good time for creating.  Unfortunately I think everyones on point aswell when you’re depressed.

L: You're a woman of many talents. I know you love fashion, what coul you tell me about this area?
U: Its like any other art form... its a way of expressing yourself.  I began to attend a school to do the fashion designer, but making music is time consuming and I had no more to devote to that area, so I had to leave, but I'd like to do more in fashionable in the future..

L: Is there a designer you're into right now?
U: ACNE is brilliant, as is Alexander Wang. A dear friend and personal favorite is Alexandre Vauthier... that man is genius!!!

L: You grew up in Hong Kong after you moved to Miami and now live in Paris .. Which of these Towns do you love more than others and why?
U: I was in Miami a week or 2 ago and fell in love with it really, for the first time.  I think after such a hard winter in Europe it was such a shock to see the ocean and weather... I had a blast!! Hong Kong I love to death.... but Miami is really grabbing my attention right now!

L: What are your plans for the future?
U: I am working on a mixtape right now with some very talented young artists... and of course my second album.. Then Tour! Tour! Tour!

L: Where do you think you'll be in 10 years?
U: No idea.. Making jam in the country, writing books, a therapist, housewife, 6 FT UNDER?!  Maybe the same place I am now.... If this whole expierence has taught me anything its that you really cannot know what the future holds!

L: Ann.. I'm one of yours fans.. Could you please invite me to your next concert? 
U: Of Course! I will!
