A rare Nike sneaker sold for $437,500
Purchased during an auction at Sotheby's and Stadium Goods
July 24th, 2019
The Sotheby's auction house closed yesterday its first auction dedicated to the world of sneakers, in collaboration with the premier sneaker and streetwear marketplace Stadium Goods. 100 very rare models have been sold, including two pairs of Nike Mag (2011 and 2016) inspired by those worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future, some Friends & Family versions of Air Jordan 1 and especially the Nike Moon Shoe. This running shoe was hand made by one of Nike's founders, Bill Bowerman, for the University of Oregon athletes during the Olympic trial for Monaco '72.
The model sold by Sotheby's is provided to have never been worn among the 12 existing examples in the world. The $437,500 paid by the entrepreneur and collector Miles Nadal exceed the previous record for the purchase of a sneaker, recorded by a Converse worn by Michael Jordan during the 1984 Olympics: $190000.
The starting price of $80,000 and the initial estimate of $160000 have been largely exceeded by what is also the first sneaker produced with the Waffle sole, relaunched in recent months thanks to collaborations with sacai and Undercover.
Miles Nadal the week before awarded another 99 models during a private sale and stated that a museum will soon be set up to collect all the models purchased, including the Nike Moon Shoe.
