5 Style Lessons from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The 90s cult series can still teach us a few things when it comes to fashion
July 2nd, 2019
Quite unexpectedly, yesterday Netflix released all the episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the 90s cult series that marked the debut of Will Smith.
6 seasons, 148 episodes that revolve around the adventures of Will, who from Philadelphia moves to the lavish household of his aunt and her lawyer husband, in the wealthy area of Bel-Air, Los Angeles: Will's explosive and over-the-top personality will have to adapt to formal dinners, private schools and all those comforts that in the hood were not even conceivable. The series is the perfect reflection of the '90s, from the references to the guest stars - like Naomi Campbell or Tyra Banks - from music to especially fashion. What Will Smith would wear in the show not only was the perfect representation of what the kids used to wear in those years - especially Afroamerican kids - but above all he became the model and the reference point even in the following years.
In all these years of the show, Will has taught us many things, from dancing (even though in this area Carlton is a valid opponent), to how to wear a dungaree or a snapback. We've gathered here 5 style lessons from Will, the freshest of Bel-Air.
#1 Loud Prints
It's quite difficult to find an episode where Will wears a plain white T-shirt. He would rather opt for printed T-shirts and shirts - pinstriped, with an abstract pattern, with polka dots - all in very bright nuances that can't go unnoticed.
#2 Snapbacks
It's the most iconic item of Will's style. Above all in the first seasons, there's hardly a frame where Will is not wearing a cap, clearly with the visor backwards or on the side.
#3 Nike Sneakers
In over 148 episodes the most important lesson Will has ever taught us is that there's no such thing as too many sneakers. Since the pilot episode, Smith makes a fashion statement with a pair of Air Jordan V "Black Metallic", which we will see also in the following episodes, taking immediately Nike's sides. Will alternates sneakers like the Huarache and the Air Max 95 with a great number of Air Jordan silhouettes, his real love. On the occasion of Will Smith's 50th birthday last September, Nike released the Air Jordan 5 "Fresh Prince" as a homage to the series that made him famous.
#4 Blazer Jackets
Despite his sporty style, Will is often in a very formal and sophisticated environment, where the right outfit is essential. Even in this case, though, Will can always add his personal touch: since the first episode, Smith wears a black tuxedo paired with a printed tank top, Jordan sneakers and snapback on the head. The most questionable suit of the entire decade is the one sported by Will in the episode with Oprah as the special guest star.
#5 Sandals with Socks
This is the outfit you will be wearing all summer long, courtesy of Will Smith at the Playboy Mansion along with Hugh Hefner himself. White tank top printed maxi shorts and above all white sandals to be worn with white socks, an easy look to replicate with these Teva Sandals designs.
