All the inspirations behind the CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC SS19
"Watch out for the shark!"
September 12th, 2018
Tuesday evening, New York, 39th Street.
A naked space immersed in red light, broken by a series of screens that reproduce a placid sea, welcomes Jeff Goldblum, A$AP Rocky, Laura Dern, Remi Malek, Jake Gyllenhaal, Saoirse Ronan, Millie Bobby Brown and all the other stars and insiders who came to Calvin Klein's headquarters to watch Raf Simons' latest collection.
The Belgian designer continues his journey, literally and psychologically, through America and, this time, brings us, as he himself explains in a press release
"to the edge of the landscape: the beach. At the beach there is this incredible idea of beauty, but also a tension—between land and ocean, a feeling of two worlds meeting, maybe colliding. There’s a sense of the unexpected—and always, a temptation.”
The unmistakable notes created by John Williams for the soundtrack of Jaws begin, awakening within the listener a latent fear towards something looming, and the show also begins. When the first models start to alternate everything is clear. Kaia Gerber, Ellery Harper (son of Laura Dern and Ben Harper) and the others show off wet hair, t-shirts with the poster of the 1975 Spielberg film, neoprene wetsuits, worn with the top folded up to reveal an interior of prints all-over, Aran sweaters that look like bites and other Breton stripes, fisherman style red berets. Transgression, the idea of the predator, and a fundamental questioning of authority, "a typically American rebellion", gradually becomes
"tension between different worlds and different environments: youth and maturity, man and woman, restrictions and privileges, rebellion and conservatism".
The trait d'union between these two worlds are the accessories. Earrings similar to fishing lures and bags in snakeskin that look like scuba tanks or buoys clinging to the bottom with big chains are the bridge that transports the collection from the atmosphere of Jaws to those of another cult movie, The Graduate.
Simons translates the film with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft with a series of oversized blazers made of Harris Tweed or herringbone cashmere, with touched togas and cocktail dresses in animal prints reminiscent of the garments worn by the seductive Mrs. Robinson. This CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC collection for the SS19 is a winning mix that confirms Raf Simons' boundless talent and how his adventure by Calvin Klein is revealing to the world that he is still has the talent to win in these fashion weeks. Because? This is explained by the words of the Belgian designer himself: "disasters happen, but they turn into beauty, and beauty is around us and can often turn into disaster." A disaster that the new creative director of CK knows how to make fashion.
