A first look at Riccardo Tisci's Burberry Collection
Will the gamble pay off?
May 14th, 2018
Early last year, after 12 years at the helm of Givenchy as creative director, Riccardo Tisci announced he would be leaving the couture house. It came as a bit of a surprise, and perhaps not the most obvious of fits when Burberry then announced at the start of March this year, that Tisci would become their new chief creative officer.
"Riccardo is one of the most talented designers of our time. His designs have an elegance that is contemporary and his skill in blending streetwear with high fashion is highly relevant to today's luxury consumer. Riccardo's creative vision will reinforce the ambitions we have for Burberry and position the brand firmly in luxury,” said Marco Gobetti, Burberry’s chief executive.
This isn’t the first time Tisci and Gobetti have worked together, Gobetti, was previously president and chief executive at Givenchy and was responsible for hiring Tisci to the brand, who was relatively unknown at the time. Tisci was able to breathe some much needed new life into Givenchy, and it’s Gobetti’s bet that he’ll be able to do the same for Burberry, though with its much stricter design aesthetic historically, many have wondered what the designer will do with the classic beige trench coats and signature Burberry square patterns.
“The contemporary street style orientation of Riccardo Tisci is a great match to relaunch the image of Burberry,” writes Mario Ortelli, luxury goods analyst.
We've wondered exactly how much of this contemporary street style would manifest itself at Burberry, and we can now present a glimpse at a few of the pieces in the upcoming collection. Dubbed B classic the first offerings show, as the name hints, a rather classic and muted approach in design and silhouettes, though be it with a stand out poncho, injecting a bit more of Tisci’s own street style feel into the collection.

“I wanted to celebrate the beauty, heritage, and legacy that I discovered when I first arrived at Burberry. B Classic is an edit that I've curated to honor the icons of the House - pieces like the trench coat, the quilted jacket, the car coat, the kilt - which sits at the heart of the SS19 pre-collection designed by the fantastic Burberry design team. “Tisci”
What direction the rest of the collection will take remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more reveals and details coming soon!
